How Do You Know When Glutenend?

I'm looking for people to respond to this who did NOT have gastro symptoms prior to being diagnosed. Others are welcome but I need help from someone in my situation if they're out there. I have unexplained anemia - that's what led to my testing for celiac disease. My question is - what happened to you when you went gluten-free? If I can eat gluten now without problems, how will know if I get 'glutened' accidentally once I start the diet? Will I even know? Maybe once all the gluten gets out of my system and I take some in without knowing, it will really make me sick, even though it didn't before. Sort of like someone who really drinks a lot (alcohol) and if they stop for a long period and then have a drink it will hit them much harder than when their tolerance was higher. Anyone out there with answers?

Thanks in advance for sharing.

Everyone is different as far as reactions go. If you don't have symptoms now it is very possible you may get them once you go gluten-free. Alot of people become more sensitive after starting the diet....like you described. You also may never experience symptoms...this can happen as well. If you have celiac disease you just need to follow the diet 100% regardless of whether or not you experience symptoms.

I didn't have significant symptoms - certainly nothing that would originally have had me thinking celiac. A bit of bloating, and some gaseous pains. Nothing really that big - could have been lactose intolerance symptoms. Once I went gluten-free, however, the symptoms were easier to identify if I had been glutened. So, just because you don't currently notice symptoms, doesn't mean you won't, in the future, be able to figure out the symptoms you will manifest. But every body is different, and you'll have to see how it goes for you (while avoiding gluten as best as possible!).

I am like you, no GI symptoms at all. I accidentally licked cake batter off the side of my hand a few days ago (baking cupcakes to send to my kids schools for Halloween). As soon as the taste hit my tongue I freaked, I was so mad at myself for making such a rookie mistake! Really, it was just one of those absent-minded things I've been doing for so long, sigh. Anyhow, I was right ticked that I just blew 2 months of hard work on my diet. Not a single symptom. My GI actually plans to follow me with scopes to make sure things are healing (at my request) because I don't want to go to all this effort and not know what the heck is going on in there.

Skoki-mom - so can you feel it when you get glutened now? I couldnt' tell your your note - sorry. Just so confused at this point.

p.s. sorry I reread your note and see you didn't have a symptom from the cake batter. Thanks!

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
