New Here And Need Help With Diagnosis

I recently starting seeing a new doctor. I have hypothyroidism and chronice recurrent yeast infections along with alot of stomach issues and fatigue. I had food allergy testing through Immuno Labs and it came back positive for allergies to: Banana, Barley, Buckwheat, Cheese, Cranberry, Egg, Cow's Milk, Rye, Sesame, Wheat, and Baker's and Brewer's Yeast. The new doctor thinks I have Celiac disease but the lab test she did was negative. She called me today and said even though the test came back negative she still thinks I have Celiac disease and wants me to start on a gluten free diet. Is it possible to have it and test negative??

Also, I'm overweight and not underweight..I noticed alot of Celiac people are underweight.

What do you guys think??

Rather I have it or not I'm still starting the diet because with all of the food allergies I think it could be very beneficial to me. I'm 26 years old and married with a five year old and trying to get pregnant.

Thanks

Yes, the tests can come back "false" negative. It seems to happen alot...the tests arent perfect. I think its great that you have a doctor that thought of testing you in the first place. Even better that she is recommending a gluten-free diet despite the negative bloodwork. I'd keep her if I were you. :)

Lots of Celiacs are overweight. Its a misconception that all celiacs present with classic symptoms of weightloss, bloated tummy, etc. Lots of Celiacs have no symptoms at all so you really cant diagnose by *looking* at someone. You can be underweight, overweight or have an ideal weight and still be Celiac.

As far as trying the diet...I say "Go for it!" Use this forum to learn about the diet and cross-contamination issues. Its the best resource I've found and the people here are very knowledgeable....and kind! :D

By the way...do you happen to know what tests your doctor ran? Its also possible she didnt run all the tests. If she only ran one test it wouldnt be enough to determine celiac or not.

Do you know which tests were run for celiac? Celiac has a separate panel that needs to be done but all of them really need to be done to see the full picture...and some are more accurate than others.

There can be false negatives especially if it has just been triggered.

If you plan on getting more testing for celiac you need to wait to go gluten free because you need to be on gluten for testing.

Some people with celiac get no symptoms and some do. There are over 200 symptoms associated with it and there is no set symptoms. Some people are overweight and some are underweight.

Thyroid disease is also linked with celiac.

Definitely sounds like you have a problem of some sort with gluten.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
