Hi Edmontonians,

We are heading up at the end of April for the AMPIA awards and will be staying at a hotel whose name I can't remember, but it's at the top of that windy road near the Hotel MacDonald and "above" the Muttart Conservatory. It's on Jasper Ave. or 104 something that goes East-West. Sorry I can't be more specific.

My concern is that we will need lunch, supper and the following morning breakfast for my gluten-free son. He's six. I imagine that I can bring some cereal for him (his usual breakfast is puffed rice cereal or gluten-free cornflakes), but I'm concerned about lunch and supper. Any good restaurants with gluten-free food that is suitable for a 6 year old? Something with gluten-free pasta maybe? Do you have Chianti restaurants there? We will also try to hit the Kinnickinnik store (it is a store as well as a factory, right?) so if any of you can post an address, that'd be great.

We will also spend a couple of hours at WEM, any place there that a 6 year old can eat? Of course I will pack some snacks, but I don't want to carry a 20lb backpack in the mall.

Hi,

I don't know what Hotel you're staying at, but obviously you're downtown. There is a Chianti's on Whyte (82nd) Ave. About, 10 minutes from downtown. There is also a Sorrentino's downtown... right by the Macdonald. I don't know about that location but I know the southside one on Calgary Trail has gluten-free pasta. So you could try giving them a call to ask. Personally, I like the atmosphere of Sorentinos better than Chianti's, I find Chianti's really noisy but it may just be when I went. As for West Ed, there's a Swiss Chalet in the food court. There is also two Outbacks here. I haven't tried the one across the street from West Ed, but the people at the one on Calgary Trail, you'll see it on your way in to town, has knowledgable staff. And your boys could even have the fries there because they have a dedicated fryer. Of course double check when you go! There's also a pizza place that does gluten-free pizza, perfect for lunch maybe? It's called Pizzeria Prego and they use Kinnickinnick crusts. 10" is about 12 bucks, so not really any different than regular pizza. It's on 111st and about 58th ave, right by the Sunterra and the Ambulance Station. I believe they'll deliver too.

Kinnickinnik is the factory outlet. You can get fresh baking, like pies and cakes, though they aren't overly useful about the ingredients. Unless the ingredients are on the package it's sometimes difficult to get help. A disappointment for me for sure, as I have allergies to everything!

--- Here's the info though... 10940 120 St, (780) 424-2900 It's kinda in the middle of no where. Doesn't look like the right area at all for a store so if you think that, you're in the right place!

There is a vegan restaurant at 97th Street and 107th Avenue called Padmandi's. I have never eaten there but they are supposed to have a gluten-free selection. Their menu is apparently huge. High Level Diner 10912-88 Ave is supposed to offer some gluten-free foods, also I haven't eaten there since going gluten-free. I have not had any problems with McDonalds fries, since they are Gluten-free Casein-free in Canada. The Organic grocery store is just south of Whyte on Calgary Trail, if you do need anything. Also, there is a Save-On Foods (which you don't have in Calgary) located downtown, 109th street and like one block north of Jasper Ave, if you are driving north on 109th street, it is on the left. They have many gluten-free foods.

Sicilian Pasta Kitchen on the south side has a gluten-free pasta option. Call the downtown location to find out. They are on Jasper Ave. But, the owner of the southside said only eat the tomato based sauces not the cream ones as they are not gluten-free.

I think there is a McDonalds in WEM, if not for sure there is one near it. There is a Mexican restaurant in WEM called, shoot I can't remember, anyways if he can eat cheese maybe you could have nachos. I used to eat there all the time before I went gluten-free. I didn't eat dairy at the time and they were very helpful. I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask. Tokyo Express is in the food court. They list there ingredients on their sushi packages. I'm not sure if there is a New York Fries in WEM. But I eat them at uni all the time. Plain fries, yummy.

If I think of anything else, I will write more.

In response to Felidae, there is both a McDonald's and a New York Fries (which I too eat all the time at uni) at WEM. He might be talking about Julio's Barrio, maybe? And the Organic Grocery store off whyte is Planet Organic.

Thanks, Ladies, at least now I know he won't be stuck with puffed rice and Envirokidz bars. I'm jotting all this down and putting it in a safe place until April. (Not too safe, I hope, I have to be able to find it again!)

Would you mind telling me where to buy Kinnickinnik bread at? I've never heard of it and I live in NJ.

Thanks. It's not available online either. I'm looking for a great sandwich bread for my two teens and/or a bread mix will be good too. Thanks. :)

      Anyone else get a lot of upper respiratory infections?

      Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat. In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue. A wedge...

      Anyone else get a lot of upper respiratory infections?

      I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired. I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years, I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young...

      Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

      Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways. I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux. Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following...

      Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.

      Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.
