New onset constant gas

Hi all,

I’ve been following a strict gluten-free diet for 1.5 years since I was diagnosed. The last few weeks though I’ve suffered almost continual bloated stomach and flatulence. It literally is almost constant - and I was never this way before. I can’t think of any change to my diet, activity, etc. I’m dying - it’s so uncomfortable and embarrassing to feel like I have zero control over this. Any ideas? Thank you!

First, I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this—constant bloating and gas can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you’ve been so diligent with your gluten-free diet. Since nothing obvious has changed in your routine, a few possibilities come to mind: 1) Cross-contamination or hidden gluten (have you introduced new brands, eaten out more, or tried processed GF foods with questionable ingredients?), 2) New food intolerances (dairy, FODMAPs, or even GF grains like corn/rice can sometimes cause issues over time), 3) Gut dysbiosis (an imbalance in gut bacteria, possibly triggered by stress, antibiotics, or diet shifts), or 4) Non-celiac triggers (like SIBO or fructose malabsorption).

You may also want to take choline supplements, as this helps some people.

It might help to keep a detailed food/symptom log and try an elimination diet (e.g., cutting dairy or high-FODMAP foods temporarily). Probiotics or digestive enzymes could also offer relief while you investigate.

Thank you Scott - I can’t think of much that’s changed diet wise but I’ll definitely try to see if any of this works and probiotics are a great idea thank you!

Are you eating a diet high in carbohydrates?  You might find a Paleo diet easier on your digestive system.  A Paleo diet can promote changes in  intestinal flora, effectively starving out SIBO bacteria.  

Be wary of gluten free processed foods.  Many are not enriched or fortified with vitamins and minerals lost in processing like gluten containing foods are.  Talk to your doctor and nutritionist about supplementing with vitamins and minerals while healing.  Vitamins are organic compounds that the body cannot make and so must get from the diet.   Supplementing ensures our bodies get a fair chance to absorb the essential nutrients it needs.

Not sure of your diet but I also experienced this after being diagnosed and going gluten free. Turned out to be issue with both gluten free oats and dairy. I gave up the oats and all dairy except hard cheeses and it relieved both bloat and gas. Also if you have not recently have your iron and sodium levels checked, mine were both very low and per my doc contributed to the bloating issues.

      Vitamin A is important for vision health. But be careful in supplementing it as it can lead to toxicity. Research it and consult with your medical professional. I do not have a definite answer to your original question but I was pursuing the possible cause of nutritional deficiency. But your visual deterioration could be unrelated to your celiac disease so don't rule that out.

      Currently 19. Doctors think I was 1 year old when celiac started, but I wasn't diagnosed until 18, because they didn't do lab work on minors. I've been on a strict gluten-free diet for 14 months now. For example only certified gluten-free nuts and I've researched best brands a lot. I take B vitamins, vitamin D, vitamin C, Curcumin with black pepper, black sesame and green tea extract, magnesium, iron, and a little selenium and zinc, beef liver capsules. I recently had my vitamin and mineral levels retested and D is the only one I don't have enough of now. I had my eyes tested at 17 and they were good back then.

      Not everyone with dermatitis herpetiformis needs to avoid iodine. DH is caused by gluten exposure, but iodine can worsen or trigger flares in a subset of people, especially when the rash is active or not yet controlled by a strict gluten-free diet. Some people react to iodized salt, seaweed, shellfish, or iodine supplements, while others tolerate normal dietary iodine without problems. In most cases, iodine restriction is individualized and often temporary, not a lifelong rule for everyone.

      Questions: How old are you now? How long ago were you diagnosed as having celiac disease? Do you practice a strict gluten-free diet? Are you taking vitamin and mineral supplements to offset the nutrient malabsorption issues typical of celiac disease and if so, can you elaborate on what you are taking?
