Strange Change In Appetite

Hi,

I recently found out that I have DH, and have been off gluten for over a month. The DH is gone, and my stomach is feeling great, too! (I didn't realize how completely bloated I had been!)

The weirdest thing - I used to have a major candy addiction. Now, I can't even tolerate anything that sweet. Believe me, I'm not complaining - on the contrary. But it seems that the things I most enjoy are "subtly" sweet - like yams or corn. It's like my appetite morphed into a much healthier one, without really trying. I tried a bite of a Butterfinger bar because it was on the gluten-free list, and it was TOO sweet!

Has this happened to anybody out there?

Thank you,

Shawn

I feel the same way. I really don't like sweet stuff anymore. I think I had a problem with candida overgrowth which is now gone. The candida loves sugar and maybe that was why I loved sugar. Now I have tried things like Kozy Shack Tapioca which I used to eat by the gallon and it is way too sweet. I"m not complaining either but it is weird how you can just stop liking things.

Thank you - I'm wondering if I had a candida overgrowth as well. Does it just "go away" with a gluten-free diet?

Before I was diagnosed with Celiac my doctor put me on a low carb diet, including a reduction in sugar. I cut out all high-fructose corn syrup, which meant just about all processed sweets. Now these candies seem so sweet to me as to almost be unbearable.

For me, when I went gluten free, I lost my taste for coffee. I miss the ritual of it but I can't bring myself to drink it. I used to love my morning coffee. :( It's actually a good thing because I can't have cream anymore, either.

I dont think it usually just goes away. How I understand things, candida is very opportunistic. If you have a system that isn't in great shape because of celiac then candida can start growing without much to keep it in check. I took prescription antifungals and very strong probiotics when I still wasn't better I tried Threelac which is a natural type of remedy. Finally, I got better but it took me several months. My mother just took the Threelac and she got better as well.

Since I'm gluten free now and I still take probiotics I think those factors should be enough to keep it in check, but I know some people to have it come back.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
