Is there any link between TMJ and Celiac? I have been having an aching pain in my jaw lately and I think it might be TMJ/TMD.

Hi Angie,

Someone just asked about this the other day. I don't know if there's any link, but I see it mentioned here from time to time.

I was diagnosed with TMJ Disfunction about 3 years ago by my Ear, Nose and Throat doctor. He said I was a "classic case". I also saw a Chiropractor/Accupuncturist who confirmed it.

I had an ache along my left jawline (that I'd had on and off for some time). I origionally thought it was a toothache, but the teeth there were fine. I also had soreness across the back of my head (skull) and shoulders which always felt better after a shower.

He suggested some things that might be helpful--take Tylenol or Advil when needed, use a warm compress, eat soft foods when it's painful, and massage the joint. I do notice mine gets worse after I've eaten something chewy or crunchy.

He also had me get fitted for a mouth guard--I went to my dentist for that. I use it during the night, and it does help. I was supposed to wear it as much as possible, but I really only use it while sleeping. If I slack off on using it, the pain will come back after a while.

Thanks Patti. I actually did some snooping around online and found a few articles that linked Celiac and TMJ. I'm pretty sure that's what's going on after your description. Mine is also on the left right at the joint and then the pain travels down into my neck and up into my eye. It's never severe pain, but it's starting to wear me thin. I'm currently taking Tylenol (pregnant) because I have a cold and a fever and I'm trying to keep the fever at bay. It definitely hurts worse when I'm eating so I've been trying to do easy foods like cottage cheese and applesauce. I think I'm going to wait and see if the pain subsides with the cold, but I doubt it will. It doesn't seem to be related. I guess we'll see. At first I thought I had an abscessed tooth or something, but I played with all of my teeth and none of them hurt at all.

This may not be the cause, it's pure speculation on my part, but for 10-15 years I had a tingling/burning/electric-like shock sensation that emanated from my right-neck upward across the right-side of my head. I was worried about having a stroke or something so got all sorts of tests done, including an MRI, which found not much--only a minor degenerative disk in my neck--which I just accepted as the cause. Fast forward to when I was ~45 and I was hit with shingles in the EXACT place that this sensation would travel--I ended up with a very painful case of shingles that felt like the right-side of my head had been set on fire, and had the blistering and pain that ran along the exact path of nerves that I had felt this sensation travel along for the prior 10-15 years. For me, this was a shingles warning, and all those feelings were likely inflammation in my nerves. Needless to say I've not had this since getting my shingles vaccines at 50.  Your situation could very well be something else, but I just wanted to mention this possibility because your symptoms sound similar to what I experienced. I'm not sure if you're in the age range to get a shingles vaccine, but it may be something to consider.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @Richard Rusnak! The short answer is "No". Barley is a gluten-containing grain. The three gluten-containing grains are wheat, barley and rye.  Barley and rye contain less gluten than wheat but still should be avoided. Understand that smaller amounts of gluten may not produce a noticeable reaction in so far as symptoms go, but they still may be causing some inflammation in the gut. Products derived from gluten-containing grains should also be avoided, for instance malt and malt flavoring.

My question is it possible that Barley is OK > I know wheat gives me stomach pain, rash, and severe diarrhea.

Bread has about 8 g of protein per 100 g, so a piece of bread weighing 125 mg contains 10 mg of gluten. Bread has a density of about 0.25 g/ml, so 0.5 ml of bread contains 10 mg of gluten - i.e. a bread ball 1 cm in diameter. I think it would be unlikely to ingest this much from throwing bread out for the birds.

Sciatica came to mind for me as well. You might want to get some imaging done on your C-spine.
