Back From Ca Road Trip!

I survived my CA road trip and the only time I got sick my husband also ended up not feeling well. We had both had a lobster salad and ironically my husband took longer to bounce back than me. He did say several times while he was feeling crummy, "Now I know how you feel." The road trip aspect was hard for me though, I think if we feel the need to travel again we'll rent a condo on a beach somewhere and relax!

Hey, I'm glad you had a nice trip :) Where exactly did you go in California? I live in Northern California but as a senior trip this summer I'm doing the whole "road trip" thing to Southern California and my friends and are are renting a beach house. Like you said, I thought that'd be safer. BUT im sure my friends are going to want to eat out a lot, so I was wondering if you had traveled along the coast in southern California, and if you could reccomend any accomodating restaraunts? Thanks :)

We drove from Carlsbad, to Morro Bay, to Carmel, to Napa, to San Francisco. I tried to scope out restaurants ahead of time, even stressed about it some, but it was hard in the end since we were on the go so much. I just made sure I spoke up, handed out my gluten-free cards, and I brought along lots of gluten-free power bars and salad dressings (Annie's makes them in individual packets). I had my share of bunless hamburgers (no fries of course, they always cook breaded stuff in the oil) and chicken ceasers (with my own dressing). I don't like eggs much so I missed having my toast or english muffins in the mornings. I noticed they are making Gorilla Munch cereal in individual bowls now which would be great for travel. There seemed to be a little more awareness out there about the whole gluten issue than there is here in the midwest. Don't let your gluten-free diet hold you back. Try to go to the known chains that have gluten-free menus, but if you can't, just insist on something other than Italian and you should be fine! B)

You handed out gluten-free cards? What are those?

I was just in Northern Ca!! I went to stay at my relative's house in Portola Valley in/near Palo Alto. My family visited Monterey, Carmel, Pebble Beach (gorgeous), and San Fran(Mostly Lame Advertisementraz). It was pretty cool. I had plenty of bunless hamburgers and we even went to P.F. Changs which has a gluten-free menu.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
