Hello there!

I'm a giril from the Netherlands, Europe.

I'm taking a holliday to Florida, but I have Coeliac disease, does anyone know, where I can buy glutenfree food? It has to be wheatfree as well.

Can I buy anything in supermarkets?

Or at pharmacy's?

Or do I have to bring everything with me from home?

Please help me out!!!

I'm leaving next friday.

I know about Mc Donalds already, but I need to know about everything else besides that.

I will be very thankfull

byebye

I live in central Florida, and there are several stores in the Orlando area that have a lot of gluten-free products. Most of the chain grocery stores do not contain many gluten-free products. However, check Open Original Shared Link for a list of "normal" food products that all grocery stores stock that are gluten-free. For example, some Progresso brand soups are gluten-free....their ingredients list states "contains wheat" when appropriate.

If you are coming to central Florida, let me know, and I will post the names and addresses of the stores that specialize in organic/gluten-free products.

Have a great vacation.

I don't know Florida specifically, but most "health food" stores or co-ops carry more specialty gluten-free foods. You can find them in the phone book's yellow pages.

Most of the fast food places now have a page on their web site that eiher has a gluten-free list, lists the major allergens in each item, or has complete ingredients for each item.

Outback, Carraba's, PF Chang's and Bonefish Grill all have online gluten-free menus and a locator to see if they have a branch in areas where you'll be.

And many Florida restaurants offer fresh grilled, baked or steamed seafood that should usually be safe.

I am also going to Florida on vacation (in November). This will be my first gluten-free, etc. vacation. I'm not expecting too many problems. There is a Wild Oats in Ft. Lauderdale where I can shop and probably other health food stores. I am bringing a travel toaster and some food items to get me started. Anyone have any other ideas?

Many cities in Florida have Whole Foods markets that have a variety of gluten-free foods as well as organic produce to offer. Have fun! Florida is so beautiful!

I'm in Stuart, Florida right now (just north of Palm Beach) and although there isn't a Whole Foods or Wild Oats near by I was surprised that the local Publix and Winn Dixie both had health food sections with gluten-free pastas, cereals, cookies and such, so I'm doing ok here.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
