Symptoms Of Cd?

Hi All,

celiac disease was diagnosed in my husband back in August. I have a 2 and a half year old boy who did the blood test (They had to do it in the neck) which came back positive. He also seems to have the celiac disease symptoms:

He has a blown up tummy and complains of tummy ache. Since recieving the results of the blood test (which was about 3 weeks ago) he has a loss in appetite (he always had a healthy appetite), blisters on his bum, lacks energy, pale, restless sleeper, night terrors, rage fits, also complains of pain in his legs, feet, head...

It seems weird that it all started after the blood test which was traumatic for him. Could it be psychological or is it all related to celiac disease?

Thnaks,

A worried Mom.

Honestly, I'm no doctor but I think your son is too young to have created such "psychological symptoms". He's too young to really understand celiac disease, or know what it can cause, so I say it's the celiac disease. Have you gone gluten-free yet? These all sound like classic celiac disease symptoms to me...the parents on here have had a range of reactions, but everything you've mentioned is consistent with what others have said.

All sound like classic celiac disease symptoms. When you combine positive blood tests, a parent who has it, and symptoms, you're talking about nearlry a 100 percent certainty he has celiac disease. Either ge the biopsy if you need more proof, or take him gluten-free and see if the symptoms resolve.

Be sure to keep eating gluten daily until all testing is completed.  Here is more info about how to do a gluten challenge for a celiac disease blood panel, or for an endoscopy: and this recent study recommends 4-6 slices of wheat bread per day:

You can always to the gluten challenge later, after your pregnancy, should you need a formal diagnosis. I think it's best to play it safe in this case.

Very true. I also suffered from candidiasis which had affected my intestines and toes. I think this might have triggered my gluten intolerance/celiac.

Welcome to the forum community, @Jesmar! The HLA DQ2 and DQ8 genes were the original halotypes identified with the potential to develop celiac disease. Since then, other genes have been discovered that apparently afford a predisposition to celiac disease. As is always the case, these new discoveries are not yet common knowledge and not yet widely dispersed in the medical community. It is not genetically as black and white as we once thought.
