Biopsy/endoscopy Tommarow

Hello

I am relatively new to the forum and just looking for information and support. I had positive blood work for IgA come back and so now I am on my way to get the biopsy tommarow. After reading the forums I noticed that the biopsy can be very unreliable. I haven't went gluten free yet although I haven't touched bread for about a month, but eat everything else I normally would so that my test results will be accurate.

Is there anything specfic I should ask the doctor to do before my biopsy, and does anyone know how long it takes to get the results back.

Regardless I am going gluten free after my biopsy considering I had positive blood work and these symptoms:

Acid Reflex, Burning stomach, heartburn, Migranes, unexplained Muscle pain, Joint pain, Leg cramps, Headaches, Acne, Fatigue, Loose stooles, Foul smelling, Extremly long cycles, infertility, Weakness, Spacey and Foggy.

I am wondering if when I go gluten free if I should eliminate Dairy also I have heard this helps my symptoms?

I am going to the doctor back to the doctor in about 2 weeks, should I have my vitamin and minerals checked to see if they are low also?

Any advice greatly appreciated

Thanks

Hi,

I wouldn't worry about the asking the dotor to do anything specific, he would have your information and knows what to look for. My doctor came to see me while I was still waking up after the procedure and gave me the results then. However I have heard people have to wait as long as a week. I guess it depends on if they can see the damage just by looking at the film, sadly it probably also depends on how busy your doctor is.

As far as the dairy question, it is very common for a celiac patient to have a dairy intolerance until they have healed, however, not everyone experiences this. Rather than making life more difficult for yourself,, I would start off just gluten free then seeing how you go. If you are still not improving in a month or so, then think about cutting out dairy.

Good luck with the biopsy, it really isn't as bad as it sounds :)

Hi - I just joined in this forum today because I had very positive labs and am doing my biopsy tomorrow - and your biopsy tomorrow (which was really yesterday) caught my attention. How did it go? What happens? I report to the hospital at 8:30a tomorrow with procedures at 9:30a. This is all very new to me and I'm not sure what to expect.

They will check you in, get you gowned, give you a sedative if the doctor has ordered it then you will go into the endoscopy room and you will be give a drug by vein. After that you should be waking up and going home. You may have a bit of a sore throat but other than that you will simply rest for the remainder of the day. You will not be allowed to drive until 24 hours after the test, even if you feel fine later in the day the drugs can still effect your reflexes.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
