Going To The Mall Today

I'm probably going to eat at the mall today, and I want to find something that is gluten free. The mall has taco bell, McDonalds, a pizza place, probably a sandwhich place like charlies or something, and a Japense restaurant. I figure the Japanese is my best option, now I've been there quite a few times so I know they are going to have a special which is some sort of chicken (teryaki I believe) and rice and vegtables. Is this gluten free? Are there any other options with rice which are always gluten free at these type of restaurants?

I don't want to have to not eat the whole time I'm there...

If you're going to a Japanese restaurant for the first time after gluten free and have not talked to the staff prior to eating... I would get steamed veggies and chicken with white rice. Bring your own gluten free soy sauce (LaChoy). There is always a risk for cross contamination and difficulty with a language barrier.

I think that you'll find that dining out takes a bit of research these days.

Japanese food, especially at places like the mall, but even at more authentic upscale Japanese, is not any more gluten-free than American food. Sorry to disappoint. My husband is from Japan and I have cooked Japanese at home for years and when I went gluten-free I thought, I'll just switch to Japanese. Unfortunately it isn't that easy. They use processed products that are full of gluten just like ours are. The teriyaki is not safe, it has soy sauce in it and soy sauce contains wheat. Many Japanese dishes contain soy sauce. Don't ever assume that any dish is safe. Always ask. It can be fine at one place and not safe at another because ingredients and recipes vary. I haven't eaten there but your best bet might be Chick-fil-a, they have a gluten-free menu on their website but you still have to ask about cross-contamination. If the Japanese place has plain steamed veg. and unseasoned meat and rice that has been cooked in water not broth, that might be a good choice, as long as CC isn't a problem. Imitation crab meat in sushi rolls is not gluten-free and you have to ask about the seaweed wrap as it can contain seasoning(soy sauce) that isn't gluten-free.

      Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

      I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

      Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

      Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

      Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
