Hi all,

This is very new to us. My 3 1/2 year old daughter was diagnosed with celiac about a week or two ago. I am in the process of clearing out out kitchen and doing only gluten free. She is also lactose intolerant but we are hopeful that will go away after a couple months of being gluten free. I also run a daycare and will be changing my daycare to totally gluten free. This is a lot of work, phew!! Do I need to get rid of my cookie sheets and pizza stone? They are all pretty seasoned so I am guessing there is gluten fried in there? Anyone know. Any support would be great. My daughter also was born with MCAD its a metabolic disorder and I have Lyme Disease, 3 years now. Although we are starting to wonder if I have had it longer and she also has it since she is having GI issues. Which is pretty common with Lyme. She will be tested in a few weeks. I am currently free of wheat, dairy, sugar, caffeine, and alcohol due to the lyme. My poor hubby has to deal with all of this!!

Thanks!

Julie

I would definitely toss the pizza stone, there is just no way to thoroughly clean those things. The cookie sheets may be OK if they are in pretty good shape and no scratches. But cookie sheets are relatively inexpensive to replace so it may be worth your while to replace. Definitely replace any teflon pans and wooden cutting boards/utensils. Welcome and I wish you luck!

Don't forget to toss out the toaster as well. I also got rid of cupcake pans / baking pans that were well scratched.

If you have a knife block consider replacing it also, I many times used to carelessly wipe the knife and put it back into the block without washing. Therefore, it would of been a haven for cross contamination.

If you are taking your daycare gluten free you need to look into the art supplies, sorry, it's a lot to deal with but in 6 months you will be glad for it. There are posts with lists of gluten-free art supplies on here somewhere.

Good luck,

Discount School Supply (Open Original Shared Link) is a good place to start in regards to art supplies. Sells a lot of "Colorations" brand materials that are often gluten free, casein free, soy free, nut free, etc. :)

Since she's so young, you'll want to be sure to look at your soaps, detergents, and shampoos, etc... Little ones may not rinse the soap off as well and suck on their fingers, may suck on clothing, swallow shampoo when it's rinsed off, etc... Your lipstick or anything that you wear when you kiss the midget can give her gluten. Any lotion or sunblock on her skin may be an issue if she puts her fingers in her mouth, too.

For the daycare aspect, playdough will be an issue. So may some glue pastes and potentially some tempera paints as well.

Essentially, anything that they touch can be an issue, since the babies put their hands in their mouths so much.

No problem. :-)

It is really a minefield sometimes, isn't it? I remember the first time someone mentioned chapstick to me as an issue and I was like  The craziness just never ends, sometimes.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
