Kitchen Remodel

Lostfalls

Lostfalls Newbie

Within this coming year I am going to remodeling my kitchen, not only is it "time" but my small confined kitchen is just not cutting it now that we cook EVERY meal at home and sometimes two meals (gluten-free and regular) each time.

I believe I will have a chance to replace some of my major appliances. Is there an oven or type of oven/range that is preferable (gas vs electric) or just a brand that it better for gluten-free cooking with more cooking room? Do I need a double oven?? Microwave? Is there a large fridge on the on the market that lends itself to easy separate storage of gluten-free and gluten items?

I wish I could just create another kitchen for my hubby's gluten stuff but that is not in the budget. I will have two food prep areas on different sides of the room with corresponding storage for separate cookware. Do I need two sinks?

What about islands? What are your feelings about them? We don't have one right now, and run into each other all the time - which really irritates the crap out of me when he is covered in wheat flour. He expects me to be clairvoyant and know where he is gonna go, since I am not BAM I am dusted in wheat flour. Having something right in the middle of the area just seems like trouble.

Try this stove. Has two ovens. There probably are other brands but I'm familiar with this one:

GE JB870SRSS Self Clean Dual Oven Ceramic Range

I've never had an island but would LOVE one. I would also like a separate little sink for washing produce. Would also love those drawer refrigerators and a big freezer.

As it is, we have a side by side that doesn't hold so much. We also have a little frige with freezer that isn't so good. Originally bought it for daughter because she wasn't old enough to know what was safe for her to eat. And my husband and parents kept forgetting or getting confused. We no longer need it for that because she knows and pretty much everything that goes into that fridge is gluten-free. Once in a while I will buy a sandwich for my husband. Or my parents will send home some regular cake or pie.

That is an impressive oven/range - it would help us out tremendously and be easy to fit! Thanks for the tip!

Does it also have a convection oven?

And I do wish I had a center island in my kitchen. But I built this house before being diagnosed with celiac and I figured the kitchen I have would be more than adequate. Living alone with my family grown, I really didn't do a lot of baking but do a lot more cooking and baking now.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
