Need Some Advice ;(

Over the last 4 months I have had problems with itchy legs, I know that sounds like a minor problem, but it has been very bad. Especially at night. I went to the doctor back in the spring, and told him I wasn't feeling well and my legs itched so bad it was driving me crazy. There isn't anything wrong with my skin, no rash, bumps or dryness. He told me it was just probably something I was washing with. He took blood and found that I had an iron deficiency and a vitamin D deficiency. and give me prescriptions for those. over the summer my itching is still there and I don't feel any better. In researching I have found that my symptoms seem to have a connection. I was diagnosed with osteopenia 10 years ago. In the reading I have done, thought that I may have Celiac Disease, and have went off Gluten for a week and a half. my itching hasn't gotten better. But just realized that my shampoo has wheat protein in it. So I am changing that today. My question is should I continue with my self diagnosis and see if my itching goes away? or go back to eating gluten and see the doctor? I feel very overwhelmed and confused. I have researched and read and have come to the point I don't know what to do. I would love to hear from those of you who have been threw this...Thank you so much, I think this forum is a God sent.

It would be a good idea IMHO to go back on gluten and get tested. After celiac testing is done then give the diet a strict try.

Oh, I feel for you. :( I had the same terrible itchy rash on my shins before I was diagnosed and it made me miserable. It did take a good couple of months for me to see complete improvement, but thankfully I haven't had a reoccurance since then. Hope you get some answers and relief soon!

Thank you so much, it does make me feel better to talk to those that can relate!

Ok I think I am going to do that how long do you think I should go back on gluten before I see the doctor? Thank you so much for your help.

As long as you go right back on gluten a week and a half shouldn't mess up the celiac tests. Good luck! I had an itchy rash on my hand so I know how annoying it can be.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
