Is This Feeling With Celiac Normal?

So I was diagnosed with celiac when I was younger. I believe 7, I am 24 now. I was ridiculously skinny and as soon as I stopped eating gluten i plumped up.

Lately, I would say 3-4 weeks I have been super crampy, VERY bloated, and lower abdominal fullness. (granted i did have a period last week so im sure that contributed to it, buts its still here) I have also been really gassy, no matter WHAT i eat! my stomach just rumbles and makes noise like I am hungry but I am not. I also feel even more full then usual after eating, i eat the same amount but for a little im just superrr full and then slowly my stomach makes noises and it lessens in fullness.

My bowel movements and appetite did not change at all, just this full, bloated, cramping, uncomfortableness.

I have made an appointment with my doctor, but I am in law school and have anxiety and cannot calm myself down. I wake up constantly thinking what is wrong.

I never felt this before, but I know they say celiacs are gassy and bloated. Is this normal? Can anyone give me insight? I also am the first in my family so no one else can help!

Thank you!

Do you have pain or tenderness? Just two weeks ago I had all of the symptoms that you described, but I also developed pain & pressure behind my bellybutton. It then radiated to the right side.

My doctor ordered a pelvic ultrasound to rule out something ovary related - the test showed nada & the symptoms just went away.

For me too, the symptoms started a few days after my period.

My doctor said ovarian cysts could cause those symptoms - they typically resolve themselves...

I sympathize with you! I know all that pressure & bloating is SO incredibly uncomfortable!

Sorry I don't have any answers for you - just hugs & hoping you feel better soon!

It sounds to me like there is gluten in your diet. Did you start eating anything different in the last 3-4 months, change roommates so there is gluten in the kitchen, get a pet that's eating gluten food, or start eating out frequently at a new place?

No, my diet has stayed the same, nothing new has occurred to come about. My celiac doctor ordered a blood test, but sometimes i just feel like I know better than them that something is not normal. Its not ok to feel this bloated and full all the time. And to others i dont look bloated and my clothes do not make me feel bigger or tight on me. Its strange and weird to me.

Thanks for the help! my doctor said the same thing to check or ovary related problems and all that was the same as you, nada! and so strange my pain started on my one side, went to the other and the stomach and alternates on an off. I had the pressure or pokey feeling near my belly button also. Thought it was appendix but that would have not lasted for a month. I hope my pain goes away like you said. Thank you for the assistance!

I had similar symptoms when they suspected I had (have?) endometriosis. I was about to start testing when I got pregnant, and after my son was born the symptoms went away so I never pursued it again.

You may try progesterone cream (read Dr. John Lee's books). Its not unusual to go through periods of hormonal flux and benefit from progesterone now and then.

Just a thought...

I was told, by both my doctor and the radiology tech, that pelvic ultrasounds can show different things on different days - I know, it sounds ridiculous, right?

The reason my latest ultrasound showed nothing was because there was too much stool in the way - sorry for TMI ;) I know I have/had an ovarian cyst because they saw it on a scan 10 months ago. Like I said, I had your EXACT symptoms.

At my last doctor visit, they said a repeat ultrasound would be necessary if the symptoms continued. It all lasted about 8 days, then just vanished! Weird stuff!

Just an FYI - for the extreme gas, I got down on the floor and did stretching and massaging of my abdomen. It helped to release some of the pressure. Prior to that, I could barely stand upright!

I also tried to do lots of walking (outside, alone ;) that also helped to relax me somewhat.

All best,

Pondy

Thanks everyone. Its really helpful to know that I am not the only one feeling this way.

Pondy, I did two ultra sounds once before a period and once after and they still found nothing. The doc also suspects since its stomach bloated and gassiness and lower ab bloating that it was not related to anything in the "down there" department. I do have another appointment with her in two weeks against just as a check up and I will make her repeat now that you told me. Thank you!

I guess this is just strange. I have just done a blood work, and have appointments with my regular doctor and a GI specialist in the next week just to see whats wrong. Sometimes I feel completely normal and nothing, but then the heaviness comes on strong. ugh this feeling is horrible. And today i developed some flemy (sorry tmi) and mucus in my throat and woke up with a sore back (but thats prolly due to sleep since i cant seem to lay comfortable lately). the flem might be allergies with all this pollen but who knows...

Thanks again everyone, its calming me down.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
