ARCHIVED I Don't Want Celiacs Anymore
SMRI replied to justjess22's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, you can choose to not go gluten-free and just feel cruddy for the rest of your life? Yes, I miss things, donuts, I really want a good donuts, but I don't want to spend 2 days in the bathroom just to have that donuts either. There is a adjustment period and you just have to go through a second one. Eating gluten-free at home is not difficult, there... -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat

Steaks (and salmon for my meat allergic kid), roasted brussel sprouts with cranberries and baked potatoes. I found the brussel sprout recipe on Pinterest so I haven't tried it yet. -
Neither are the cause of the other but often people have more than one autoimmune disorder, so while many with Celiac also have thyroid issues they do not cause the other.

ARCHIVED Feel Like I Can't Breathe
SMRI replied to Paeonia's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Ask your GP to run a full panel for immune deficiency. Ask for your total IgG and the 4 subclasses as well as all of the rest of the Ig____'s. (A, E, M, etc.). Why can they only send you to one specialist/month? That is ridiculous. -
With Thanksgiving coming, I decided to try making my own French Fried Onions for the Green Bean Casserole. I thinly sliced an onion (yellow) and separated the rings. I coated well with Bobs Red Mill All-Purpose flour. I got that because it was a small bag and I didn't want to spend $18 or something I wasn't sure I was going to like . I just fried the...

ARCHIVED Feel Like There Is No Answer
SMRI replied to Brit1612's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, the low TOTAL IgG. There should be a number with a wide range like 340-949 or something (I just made up those numbers). Then, they can also test for the 4 subclasses that make up the total IgG, Being low in Sub-Class 1 is fairly rare but likely in his case since it's the biggest subclass and his overall total is low. Then the other 3 subclasses are... -

I just looked at our Target today and they did not have it . Our Target has very little gluten-free stuff though. -
ARCHIVED Canyon Bakehouse G.f., Dairy Free, Soy Free Bread

Ok--that's good to know. I won't eat it fast enough normally but if I need to-that's helpful. -
ARCHIVED So Frustrating...
SMRI replied to JacqT's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Step one--find a new doctor Step two- decide if you want to do a gluten challenge if yes, good luck for the next 8 weeks if no, just go gluten free and call it a day and don't worry about a "diagnosis". -
ARCHIVED Feel Like I Can't Breathe
SMRI replied to Paeonia's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This is an old thread but have you been tested for allergies? Gasping for air all the time is not typically a Celiac reaction but an allergy reaction...or something else. Are you overweight, out of shape, have you seen an allergy doctor or a pulmonogist? -

I usually buy the Udi bread frozen. I keep it in the freezer because I thought it had to stay frozen. I could thaw it out and leave it on the counter??? -
ARCHIVED Am I Just Nervous
SMRI replied to florentine's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was told no oatmeal, even certified gluten-free, for a year. The oats are too similar to wheat and are irritating to your intestines as you heal. -
I love my electric roaster for turkey too!!

I'll have to keep an eye out for that. I didn't think to look at the bouillon until I went to make gravy last week...good thing I double checked before adding it!

ARCHIVED Celiac Testing And Insurance
SMRI replied to Water Street's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Even if my company negotiated the exact same plan as your company, our rates would not be the same. That is the point you are missing with this. Have you actually priced out a comparable plan? You might be surprised. You can keep believing what you want, but I deal with this day in and day out and I see the numbers on all sides and what you are saying... -
ARCHIVED Feel Like There Is No Answer
SMRI replied to Brit1612's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would focus on the low total IgG, if that is what you mean by low IgG. I would take him to an immunologist or infectious disease specialist that specializes in immune deficiency. Is he sick a lot, other than the GI stuff? Your IgG is kind of like your army to fight off various infections, sort of. Within the IgG there are 4 subclasses and subclass ... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Testing And Insurance

What do you mean by "contract" and "professionals" that the general public doesn't get? -
Our family loves gravy. I use the water from the mashed potatoes to mix with the pan drippings. I used to use Wondra, but can't any more, so I mix cornstarch with water before adding it to the drippings. I think there are directions on the box but I just eyeball it. I think it's 2 TBSP/cup of water??? 1/4 cup maybe. Bring the drippings/potato water...

ARCHIVED Celiac Testing And Insurance
SMRI replied to Water Street's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The plans are more affordable than before IF you had to buy a private policy...since your employer has to pay at least 50% of your premiums for a group plan at work, you don't see how much your plan really costs. The plans on the exchange are a similar cost with similar out of pocket costs if you compared apples to apples, however, you pay the full premium... -
ARCHIVED Who Is Responsible For Making Sure There's Something Safe To Eat?
SMRI replied to maria714's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is the Mother's responsibility. I know someone like the Mom in the OP's post and it's very frustrating to watch this mom. She doesn't realize how much negative attention she brings on her child by acting like that and just simply bringing her own food would not make her stand out at all. Besides that, why would you trust a pot luck to begin with? ... -
I've lost about 15 lbs since my diagnosis this past summer. My dr said a pound a week should be my goal. Any more than that and it's not sustainable loss. It's hard to go so slowly but it's working. They put me on a 1200/day calorie diet (I'm short, 5' 3") and the first couple weeks were hard but now it's about all I can eat without feeling stuffed. I...

ARCHIVED Do You Risk Eating Meat That Says "shared Equipment"?
SMRI replied to mommyto2kids's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That would lead me to believe that the flavoring was not gluten-free and something that they use on that line is also not gluten-free--maybe they do beef that is seasoned with soy sauce or something similar. Shared equipment just isn't safe. -
What test came back positive and what was your number and the scale used. You really need to find a different GI dr if he visually inspected your intestines and did not do biopsies. What was the point of the scope then?? Usually any positive reading on one of the standard Celiac tests means you have Celiac.
