Should I Work Out Or Is It Pointless?

I am 15 years old and I was diagnosed with celiac disease about a month ago. I think I am about average when it comes to strength for a 15 yr old guy. My plan for the summer was to work out and get a six-pack and all that and of course be gluten free. I think I have been gluten free for about half a month now and my fatigue is a little better but I know that isn't enough time for the villi to heal. And without villi I can't get nutrients. Sooo, my question is if I work out, go to the gym, run will it improve my muscles or will it just be pointless??  Any help would be greatly appreciated cause I'm really running out of time 2 more months until schools back.

No, it's not pointless.  Just listen to your body and don't over do it!  I still run, swim and cycle despite my anemia.  I'm just going at a slower pace than I was.  You are getting some nutrients.  Just take your vitamins and eat lots of lean protein.   There were points when I had to slow down or stop exercising (three weeks after a hospital trip that resulted in a back injury) or when I knew that my daily chores/job would not get done if I went on a 50 mile bike ride.  So, I'd skip the exercise or wouldn't go as far.  I've always worked out three times a week swimming.  That never stopped.

Have fun.  Stay hydrated, eat lean protein and workout in the early morning when it's cool!  (Hitting over 100 degrees today!)

Definitely work out.  I believe that it helps with the healing process.  I always feel better when I work out.  Don't worry about the 6 pack abs though.  Just try to be healthy.  From a woman's point of view, sometimes those really built guys just look self centered rather than appealing.

Thanks for advice again lol. You answer all my questions. I too feel better after a workout. It's just it can be hard sometimes to start with a workout cause i kinda still have fatigue.

I understand the fatigue.  Some days you might just want to go for a walk.  It really does help to get out and do something.

Yep, I've noticed that. Thanks for all your help!

You are welcome.  Have a good summer.  My 16 year old son has started running recently.  It is good to see him able to do that.  For so long his reflux symptoms kept him from being able to do much.

no it is not pointless. Working out is about fitness. The one thing I would suggest is to make sure you are eating enough to support your workouts. Being 15 and male is optimum for muscle growth but you need to eat enough to allow that to happen .

ok thanks for ur advice, i do really think that I am eating alot. So the no villi thing and not being able to get that much nutrients doesnt mean that I cant gain muscle or will it make musclebuilding harder?

i have not had my had my vitamin and mineral levels tested, but i did have an endoscopy, the biopsys showed that my villi were damaged but still not totally flat and i had inflammation as well. But before that i had two blood tests the first one being 90 and the second one 64 so idk why the second one was better than the first.

And just curious how have you cut soy, gluten AND dairy from ur diet, that seems impossible to me, im just speechless, and i thought i had it bad with type 1 diabetes and celiac disease, but i reallly shouldnt be complaining lol

I was undiagnosed for a very very long time and the damage to my gut was quite extensive .

How have I cut soy gluten and dairy from my diet??? I had no choice     After my diagnoses I discovered many other intolerances  . We all do what we have too .

Well props to you for overcoming so many challenges. If u can cut all that from ur diet i should be able to atleast cut out gluten lol.

Bread has about 8 g of protein per 100 g, so a piece of bread weighing 125 mg contains 10 mg of gluten. Bread has a density of about 0.25 g/ml, so 0.5 ml of bread contains 10 mg of gluten - i.e. a bread ball 1 cm in diameter. I think it would be unlikely to ingest this much from throwing bread out for the birds.

Sciatica came to mind for me as well. You might want to get some imaging done on your C-spine.

Maybe this is sciatica? When mine acts up a little, I switch my wallet from one back pocket to the other. this isn't a substitute for more serious medical help, but for me it's a bandaid.

OK so I just learned something completely new about this for the first time in years, that is REALLY WEIRD. One of my nerves that likes to "burn" or whatever is doing it every time I bow my head! I mean it is completely repeatable. Literally every time. Once my head goes beyond a certain angle *boom*. Nerve goes mental (lower right leg pain). What the hell. I've never seen a direct trigger such as this before that I can recall. The pain was the usual type I get from this problem - I suspect somehow the head movement was interrupting descending inhibition processes, causing the pain to leak through somehow.

I've only made this a couple of times but it's really easy and I love the flavor. If you can, use all of the ingredients to get the full palette of flavors. I use fresh or canned tomatoes and I don't worry about peeling them. If you don't have harissa, there are replacement recipes online. If you don't have the greens, I suggest adding a little chopped baby spinach or celery leaves to add a dash of green color to this red dish. Best eaten in first couple days because flavor tends to fade. Leftovers are still good, but not as vibrant. Ingredients 2 medium eggplants, partially peeled and cut into cubes (original recipe says 1 in, but I prefer 1/2 to 3/4 in) 2 tomatoes, peeled and crushed 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped or minced 1 tablespoon fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons spicy harissa (I use Mina brand) 1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon paprika ½ teaspoon black pepper 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar or lemon juice 1 tablespoon tomato paste (optional) Salt to taste Preparation     • Heat olive oil in skillet or pot over medium heat. Add all ingredients and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cover and cook on low heat for an additional 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.       • Serve warm or cold as a side or with bread for dipping. Enjoy! Original recipe is here, if you want to see photos: mina.co/blogs/recipes/zaalouk-moroccan-eggplant-salad
