Neurological Symptoms With Other Food Allergies?

hello. i would never consume gluten on purpose! but, i have other food allergies like dairy and eggs. every now and then i'll let myself have some gluten-free bread (which has egg(s)...which makes it soft and fluffy), or something else that has dairy and/or eggs.

my question is if those other allergies would cause neurological damage such as gluten?

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

First of all, I don't think gluten causes neurological damage (except perhaps in rare cases where it can affect brain tissue). but it can cause neurological symptoms, as can other intolerances and allergies. What are your symptoms like when you do it eat dairy or eggs? Do you have these reactions no matter how much you eat, or is it ok if you just have a tiny amount on occasion?  Are you sure you are allergic and not just intolerant?

The research is still sketchy, I think, but generally it seems that eating foods you're intolerant too might have nasty symptoms, but they don't do the same kind of damage as gluten does (to the villi). However, they can aggravate your gut and make it more difficult to heal.

Hopefully someone will chime in, but I think if a little bit of dairy/egg isn't bothering you, that it probably isn't a problem if you only do it occasionally. This, of course, does NOT apply to gluten.

Hope that helps

I agree with Peg. Other intolerances have impeded my healing and when ingested cause a wide variety of symptoms. Any food that causes symptoms should be avoided for six months and then reintroduced. If they still irritate wait another six months...most folks get many of these foods they are intolerant of back - given time.

In the United States, cows and chickens are generally fed and fattened with grains rather than grass.   And animals that are fed grains are very high in omega- fatty acids, which are inflammatory.  Chickens that are grown only on grass (which is very hard to find) lay eggs with an omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio close to 1 to 1 (ie:  in balance).  Eggs from chickens fed grains have an omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio of about 20 to 30 to 1.  Similar thing occurs with milk from grain fed cows.  Consequently, these products are best avoided.  Having said that, i once had a friend who was a nurse who had neurological symptoms that none of the specialists could diagnose.  She also had reactive hypoglycemia.  When she cut sweets (ie: simple sugars) out of her diet, her neurologic symptoms went away over time.  Have you ever had a fasting blood sugar performed or been tested for glucose intolerance?

If you are allergic vs. intolerant, why would you risk eating it in the first place?

Thank you. I already cut out dairy and eggs because I found out I was having a problem with them. To be honest I’m just getting worn out 😂

Hi Kitty, thank you for your e mail,  I have seen a nutritionist who seemed to be happy with the food diary I had been keeping and nothing was mentioned about extra vitamins, and I’m still using milk etc . The steroids seem to be working and everything is functioning as it should however,  the course of tablets finish at the end of February and I have an appointment with the consultant early April probably followed by another endoscopy, as far as I’m aware I have not been tested for vitamin B and will definitely discuss it with the doctor on my next visit.

It might be understandable to say "friends or family weeded me or you out of their lives". Some people are fearful of getting out of their comfortable known lives and having to make changes to accommodate another.   If they are too uncomfortable to walk a mile with me, I shake the dust off my feet and journey on.  They're just not ready to learn that lesson.  But you confidently keep going on your journey.  They can catch up later.

You might also be sensitive to other things while you are healing. Dairy, for example. It won't harm you from a celiac standpoint but is inflammatory and could be bothering you. Have you been keeping a food & symptom journal? Might be worth it for a week to see if you notice something you are eating prior to the times you feel your worst. I hope you start feeling better soon.

Someone recently recommended Superfoods for looking up recipes free of allergens or intolerances.  It's a web site but there's also an app.
