Hello everyone,

I have been gluten free since December, and plan on staying that way for the rest of my life.

I have not been diagnosed with anything (as I understand the testing for Celiac disease and gluten intolerance is expensive and unreliable). The reason I started the diet was because of the insane, immediate, miserable bloating directly after most meals (I am a normal weight, with a small stomach, I would look eight months pregnant after eating); and the ridiculous constipation problems (was going maybe every 3-5 days). These problems have bothered me for years.

I went off of gluten for two weeks initially, and my stomach became totally flat with minimal bloating normally, and none after eating; and my system became regular once again. I decided to test it and ate something with gluten, and POOF, back came the miserable bloating, and it was two weeks before I became regular again.

I doubt I have Celiac Disease, I think I would have been much more ill if I did, but I think I definitely have some sort of gluten intolerance. I've ruled out dairy, so that's not it.

Everybody I've talked to has had difference symptoms, so I was hoping to find someone with a similar story.

EDIT: Also, I have always had major problems with hypoglycemia, and have actually almost passed out behind the wheel as a result of it, but since going gluten free it's all but gone.

Hi Rae

I have the same with my stomach

I am going to the Dr on monday and going to ask for the test I whet on the atkins with the wife and my stomach went down in about 3-5 days. I only weigh 10st   but when I had bread again it was back its hard and looks like im pregnant.

had pasta last night and was sweating dont know if this is anything to do with it?

I really dont wona eat wheat and Gluten now I think this is whats causing me my problems but you have to to get a proper result from the tests. I have more symptoms as well. it was only when we was taliking to someone last week he said you need to talk to someone I know some one with Celiac and it could be that.

I wouldn't rule out celiac just because you don't think your symptoms are bad enough. A lot of folks here had NO symptoms and were shocked when they were diagnosed with celiac. It sounds like you have decided to go gluten-free without the official diagnosis and that's fine. Just be aware that if you do indeed have celiac, you could be damaging your body with even the slightest bit of cheating or cross-contamination. So check out the Nebie 101 thread in the coping section. It'll teach you all sorts of things about how to avoid cross-contamination plus so much more.

Oh, and welcome. :) Feel free to ask as many questions as come to mind. We're glad to help.

Thank you so much for your reply. Digestive problems really run in my family so I wouldn't be surprised if Celiac runs in my family. I would be willing to bet my grandmother had it. I've lost ten pounds since going off of gluten, so I must be doing something right! I'm making sure I eat plenty of foods high in calcium and am taking vitamin B complex. :) Thanks!

I agree you shouldn't rule out celiac. I'm currently going through testing, have just ate gluten for 6 weeks so I could be retested as I think it's important to rule it out. I have no major digestive issues but like you do get bloated to the pregnancy look and can suffer constipation but I never suffer the opposite.

I wanted to say aswell I have suffered hypoglycaemia since childhood and have just been diagnosed with reactive hypoglycaemia, however since I've been back on gluten I'm having hypos on an almost daily basis even though I'm still eating healthy low sugar etc, I'm wondering if there may be a link.

I was never diagnosed with anything blood sugar related, but I remember having serious lows from YEARS back, younger than ten years. Once I took it before it got really low, and it was 56. I just talked to my doctor about it and he kinda blew it off (most doctors do), but since going gluten free (two and a half months now) I've only had maybe 2 issues during all that time, as opposed to every day, and that was only when I ate PURE sugar (syrup with my lovely gluten free waffles).

Good luck with the test, I am not willing to eat gluten willingly ever again, so I'll likely never go through the testing. I feel like I have a normal sized stomach for the first time in a decade.

Oh, okay. The lower case "b" in boots in your first post didn't lead me in the direction of a proper name. I thought maybe it was a specialty apothecary for people with pedal diseases or something.

In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! There are other things that may cause elevated tTg-IgA levels, but in general a reaction to gluten is the culprit:

Hi @trents Just seen this - Boot's is a chain of pharmacies in the UK, originally founded in the 19th Century by a chap with the surname, Boot.  It's a household name here in the UK and if you say you are going to Boot's everyone knows you are off to the pharmacist! Cristiana

I am looking to find a Celiac Dietician who is affiliated with the Celiac Disease Foundation who I can set up an appointment with.  Can you possibly give some guidance on this?  Thank you!

Nacina, Knitty Kitty has given you good advice. But I would say/add find a Fat Soluble B-1 like Benfotiamine for best results.  The kind found in most Multivitamins have a very low absorption rate. This article shows how taking a Fat Soluble B-1 can effectively help absorption by 6x to7x times. https://www.naturalmedicinejournal.com/journal/thiamine-deficiency-and-diabetic-polyneuropathy quoting from the article.... "The group ingesting benfotiamine had maximum plasma thiamine levels that were 6.7 times higher than the group ingesting thiamine mononitrate.32" Also, frequency is much more important than amount when it comes to B-Vitamin. These are best taken with meals because they provide the fat for better absorption. You will know your B-Vitamin is working properly when your urine becomes bright yellow all the time. This may take two or three months to achieve this.......maybe even longer depending on how low he/you are. The Yellow color is from excess Riboflavin bypassing the Kidneys....... Don't stop them until when 2x a day with meals they start producing a bright yellow urine with in 2 or 3 hours after the ingesting the B-Complex...... You will be able to see the color of your urine change as the hours go by and bounce back up after you take them in the evening. When this happens quickly......you are now bypassing all the Riboflavin that is in the supplement. The body won't absorb more than it needs! This can be taken as a "proxy" for your other B-Vitamin levels (if taken a B-Complex) ...... at least at a quick and dirty level......this will only be so for the B-1 Thiamine levels if you are taking the Fat Soluble forms with the Magnesium as Knitty Kitty mentioned. Magnesium is a Co-Factor is a Co-factor for both Thiamine and Vitamin D and your sons levels won't improve unless he also takes Magnesium with his Thiamine and B-Complex. You will notice his energy levels really pick up.  His sleeping will improve and his muscle cramps will get better from the Magnesium! Here is nice blog post that can help you Thiamine and it's many benefits. I hope this is helpful but it is not medical advice God speed on your son's continued journey I used to be him. There is hope! 2 Tim 2:7 “Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things” this included. Posterboy by the grace of God,
