Should I seek further testing?

Hi!

My pediatrician recently had my son tested for celiac disease.

His IgA came back negative, the IgG was positive.

I, his Mom, have celiac disease and I am wondering if I should seek further testing with a GI doctor?

The pediatrician said he was negative for celiac disease, I just want to make sure I do not miss anything.

thank you,

Tracy

I would definitely seek further testing. From what I've read, celiac disease is often overlooked and miss-diagnosed (specifically, false negatives). Regardless of the outcome, you'll know you covered all your bases.

you need a new peds, if the IgG is +, he needs further testing, esp. since YOU are dx celiac.

That’s exactly my thought. Especially because all of my blood work came back negative and a biopsy diagnosed me! I feel like if even one part is positive that is more than what I had and I have it.

Consider getting the entire celiac panel.  If my GI had not ordered it, my diagnosis would not have been made.  I test positive to ONLY the DGP IgA, yet my biopsies revealed severe damage.  Even in follow up testing, I have never had a positive on the EMA or common screening TTG.  The DGP is thought to be better in small kids and who knows why I test out this way.    Not everyone presents as a “cookie cutter” patient.  Just like you!

The ulcers are prepyloric ulcers. Not sure if that makes any difference.

Duodenal ulcers are not uncommon either and often result from H.Pylori infections. https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/duodenal-ulcer

I had what was termed "lesions," and normally ulcers are in the stomach, rather than the small intestines. I'm not sure why they would want you to have her continue to eat gluten, since she had a positive blood test, but as her doctor said, if she is uncomfortable and having symptoms why not have her go gluten-free at this point? If her symptoms improve, it would be another indicator that she has celiac disease and/or gluten sensitivity. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):

In the USA we also do a fruit cake that probably has UK origins, and my grandmother's always had lots of rum in it. I just found these:
