Conference In Monterey Ca

Hello

I am traveling to Monterey CA for a conference. Looking for restaurants that might be friendly to a gluten-free diet in the area. I am familiar with many of the big chains that are helpful but have no idea which ones would be walking distance, short cab ride from the convention center.

Leaving in mid-October.

Any ideas?

Lucky you.....I lived in Monterey for 7 years - but ate wherever I wanted....non-diagnosed Celiac!

When you say convention center I assume you mean the Marriott? If so...you can walk to Montrio - a really wonderful bistro open for lunch and dinner with a great British chef....he should be able to accommodate. Of course, I moved away two years ago and things do change....but to the best of my knowledge he is still there. Down further is a gorgeous restaurant called Stoke's - a little pricier - but a renowned chef who also should be knowledgeable about gluten issues. Just phone in advance. You are close to the wharf, and I would avoid most restaurants there (well......as a native I avoided it entirely since it is packed - but you'll want to see it) except one called....Domenico's, I believe? The best oysters rockefeller I've ever had (I think those have breadcrumbs :( ).....but seafood carefully prepared should be safe. At this moment I can't think what else is around.....there are so many unbelievable bistros all over the place I could recommend, but would require driving.....

Oh, if you're there on a Tuesday evening, there's the most wonderful farmers' market on Alvarado (the street runs right into the Marriott) and they sell everything.

If you do rent a car.....go to Passionfish in Pacific Grove - outstanding. Or Loutas' L'escargot in CArmel.....warm, quaint tiny bistro with some of the best food around. I know for a fact that Kerry Loutas will easily accommodate. There are so many others......*sigh* I miss that place!

Have fun!

If your up for a little bit of a drive, maybe 20 or 30 minutes, try the Pacifc Edge restaruant at the Carmel Highlands Inn. It's pretty expensive but outstanding! They will make any accomodation for you.

Thanks for the great suggestions. Yes I will be at the Marriott and over a Tuesday. I was last there in 1998 but had no dietary issues than so ate at lots of great restaurants.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
