Depression/gluten Intolerance, Likely Or Not

Hi, I've had dpression for several years, accompied with other symptoms like sun sensitive rash, floaters and chronic fatigue. Depression treatments have given me little relief.

I've been looking into diet and stumbled on gluten intolarnce by accident. I initially tried cutting out simple sugars and processed carbohydrates (bread ect). While doing this, I ate no processed food and after further study, discovered the only thing I was taking in with gluten, was my multi-vitamin.

The results were a slight lift in depression and my sun sensitive rash has completely cleared up (rash present for years/ the entire time with depression).

For three days now I've been completely gluten free, checking everything, but have reintroduced sugars into my diet. My depression seems to have increased some, but the sun sensitive rash's still gone.

I've never had any of the basic stomach problems like bloating, gas and diarrhea, that seem common in celiac or gluten intolerance. I mean I've had them, but it's not a frequent problem.

Is it possible for gluten intolerance to only affect skin, energy and mental function?

Thanks

The answer to your question is YES. Celiac has over 200 symptons and energy and mental function or lack of, are the more prominent ones.

I would keep eating gluten and get tested. If you don't get tested now, you'll have to eat lots of gluten for months later if you decide to get tested.

Your symptoms could be celiac. They could also be another systemic disease, like Lyme Disease. I have Lyme and feel much better on the gluten-free diet even though I do not have celiac. Rash, floaters (mine look like the pics on Open Original Shared Link), depression and rashes are common symptoms of Lyme. Check out the full list of symptoms on Open Original Shared Link. Open Original Shared Link is another good website.

I would get tested as you are researching. If your celiac tests come out negative, but you feel better, gluten-free, then you can certainly stay on the diet ... I did!

You are doing the right thing ... taking charge of your own health and trying to get to the bottom of your symptoms! Good for you!

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
