Hi! My name is Katie and I am a new addition to this board. I have never been diagnosed with celiac disease or anything like that, but I do know that I feel so much better when eating gluten free. I have been living in Dalian, China for the past year as a student, and know that I "cheat" a lot because I am not sure what foods have gluten in them, or how to ask. A lot of the time I just let it slide because gluten doesn't kill me, just maybe gives me a little discomfort. I do know that when I went back to America for a month at Christmas and went on a completely gluten free diet, I put on quite a bit of weight (that is a very good thing.) Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone had any tips for keeping to the straight and narrow while living abroad.

Welcome Katie!

We have a few members here that live in China. (Weekends tend to be a little slow around here, though). I have the opportunity to visit Shanghai and also would like to know about a China visit.

The following company makes a dining card in Chinese that explains what you can have, cannot and what is questionable. It also explains cross-contamination and the one for each language is specifically geared to the quisine of that culture.

Hey Janet,

Thank you for that information. My brother lives in Shanghai and has invited me/us to visit. I guess I just have to get the nerve up to traveling half way around the world, or I can play the martyr and send my daughters. ;) But, then again, it would be a shame to pass up an opportunity of a lifetime.

I will copy your infomation and muster some confidence. :rolleyes:

(I do have the dining cards, which will be helpful)

You have to go! Shanghai is a really awesome city and definitely worth the long trip. The worst part of the trip for me was the 15 hour flight from Atlanta. They didn't load a gluten-free meal but fortunately I had food with me and the flight attendants came up with salads and fruit to supplement. Since your brother lives there you'll have access to a kitchen. We rented an apartment so I packed a suitcase of food and cooking utinsels. As an added bonus you have extra space for gifts when you come home!

I will be in Ningbo. I hear there is a Metro and Carrefour. Any suggestions? Not to far from Shanghai, may have to venture there.

      Anyone else get a lot of upper respiratory infections?

      Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat. In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue. A wedge...

      Anyone else get a lot of upper respiratory infections?

      I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired. I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years, I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young...

      Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

      Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways. I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux. Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following...

      Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.

      Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.
