First Communion In Six Years

Recommended Posts

Are cute stories allowed here? It is coping with celiac, so I didn't go to the chat room...

Anyway, I'm Methodist. The last piece of gluten I ever deliberately ate was my communion bread. I came home, opened some mail, and read my test results. That was it. Since I am rather shy and celiac life is tiresomely full of telling total strangers about your intestines, I decided to just avoid the whole issue at church and skip Communion Sundays, which are once a month. But this year I sponsored a teenage girl (a former student of mine) for confirmation. She knew about my food problems and knew we had to do communion as part of the confirmation. She went to our minister and arranged for rice cakes and even separate wine to avoid CC. I was really touched.

I hoped during church I could just slink up and quietly take my separate rice cake with everyone else. But the minister announced the gluten free host to the congregation (in case there were any other closet celiacs out there, I guess!). I had to go up all by myself and take communion. As I did another one of my little students clapped and cheered, and everyone started to laugh. So much for remaining anonymous!
