I have celiac disease and found out in December of last year. For about 2 years now i have been tired and have NO energy AT ALL. She keeps telling me its because i am depressed, but i just don't think that is it. They have tested me for thyroid? Everything checked out okay. So I called today to make an appointment to get some tests done for tiredness and no energy. The bad thing is, my doctor has NO CLUE about celiac disease. Can you guys help me come up with a list of things they can test me for. I really am sick and tired, LOL of being TIRED and no energy. 2 years is long enough and i have even gained weight because i lay around a lot and can't do anything cause i am tired. Please help, I go in Monday morning and would like something to tell her about so i don't waist my money again for them to tell me it's because I am depressed.

Thanks everyone.

My advice reflects my experience and that of family members. There are alot of things that can cause fatigue! I was gluten-free 2 years and feeling much better but not where I wanted to be. I thought 2 years was enough healing time. It can take quite a while for us to heal, esp. if we've been undiagnosed and had active celiac disease a long time. So anyway, I went in and asked for testing for things that I thought possible based on my past medical history(demanded one test in particular) as well as common possible causes. In my case, an unplanned blood draw showed a below normal potassim level. When I corrected that with diet I felt much better. Fatigue was on the list of symptoms for that. I didn't stop there even though I felt better because I suspected diabetes/blood sugar problems and wondered about iron/ anemia because it had often been mentioned to me by Docs and I fit the profile. My doc ran thyroid as well after hearing my complaints. I was right about the diabetes. The others turned out negative. With my BG under control, I have back the energy I had hoped to have. My sister found adrenal problems to be part of her problem with fatigue and sleep proplems. There are so many tests available. Use them and your doc. to help you find the answers. Keep asking questions. Good luck to you.

In additon to the tests mentioned have them check B12, iron, folate, potassium, vitamin D and they will most likely do a CBC and liver panel. Be aware that if you take a multiple vitamin with folate that can give a false normal level to the B12. You may want to consider adding some sublingual B12 to your vitamin regime if you don't take it already. Make sure you let the doctor know what supplements you are taking.

Thanks for the replies, I am writing them down and taking the list with me. Keep them coming please.

Just a question, probably stupid. But, are you saying i shouldn't take any vitamins that have folate in them until i get tested for B12? Guess I didn't understand that part. Thanks again, i really appreciate it.

I was simply stating that the folate would skew the B12 results not that you shouldn't take it but only to make the doctor aware that you are taking it and any other vitamins or supplements. Many folks don't think of vitamins as drugs and don't disclose them when the doctor asks what drugs they take.

Vitamin A is important for vision health. But be careful in supplementing it as it can lead to toxicity. Research it and consult with your medical professional. I do not have a definite answer to your original question but I was pursuing the possible cause of nutritional deficiency. But your visual deterioration could be unrelated to your celiac disease so don't rule that out.

Currently 19. Doctors think I was 1 year old when celiac started, but I wasn't diagnosed until 18, because they didn't do lab work on minors. I've been on a strict gluten-free diet for 14 months now. For example only certified gluten-free nuts and I've researched best brands a lot. I take B vitamins, vitamin D, vitamin C, Curcumin with black pepper, black sesame and green tea extract, magnesium, iron, and a little selenium and zinc, beef liver capsules. I recently had my vitamin and mineral levels retested and D is the only one I don't have enough of now. I had my eyes tested at 17 and they were good back then.

Not everyone with dermatitis herpetiformis needs to avoid iodine. DH is caused by gluten exposure, but iodine can worsen or trigger flares in a subset of people, especially when the rash is active or not yet controlled by a strict gluten-free diet. Some people react to iodized salt, seaweed, shellfish, or iodine supplements, while others tolerate normal dietary iodine without problems. In most cases, iodine restriction is individualized and often temporary, not a lifelong rule for everyone.

Questions: How old are you now? How long ago were you diagnosed as having celiac disease? Do you practice a strict gluten-free diet? Are you taking vitamin and mineral supplements to offset the nutrient malabsorption issues typical of celiac disease and if so, can you elaborate on what you are taking?

My vision was good as a teen and now has gotten worse in the last year. Could that be caused by my celiac disease?🤓😎🥸👓🕶️
