Why Is There Rumbling/gurgling?

Hopefully I don't have another weird bodily fuction, but prior to going gluten-free and since, about 1 1/2 yrs. my stomach gurgles loudly. This is almost always at night, when I finally lay down to read, watch t.v., or just sleep.

Please, tell me that this is normal for us and maybe someone smart can tell me why this happens. (This happens when there is no chance I have been cc'd or glutoned in any way)

Thanks-

This happens to me too. It used to be worse when I ate gluten. I still experience it quite often, though. I was getting a massage a few weeks ago and she went to my abdomen and it gurgled SO loudly! LOL! It was embarassing/ the next day I had D really bad! Peppermint tea is the best thing I have found for it yet. Dr says its just my digestion issues related to celiac and/or eating too much fiber. I also avoid fatty meals because it seems to worsen it. Also digestive enzymes and probiotics have helped alot. Lately I have fluttering in my upper abdomen, too. Some kind of spasm? Anyone?

borborygmi is the technical term (at least it has an amusing name, right?)

and it's a classic sign of celiac, and a number of other digestive issues. anything that produces gas has a chance of doing it (because you're hearing the intestines move things around; if there's gas, there's more room for stuff to move). if you're still getting it gluten free, I'd:

1) double check that you're totally gluten free

2) eliminate things that cause even mild stomach unhappiness (I don't mean stomach distress, I mean "eh, I don't feel as good eating that as I do with other foods" - I'm working on doing that with tortilla chips... the salt on them is so addictive :P)

3) get regular exercise (to help mobility/circulation in the digestive system), but not for a little while after a meal

4) give digestive enzymes (like papaya enzymes) *AND* probiotics a try

I know that's not a lot of help, but that's what comes to mind.

Why Is There Rumbling/gurgling?, mainly when vertical

Sounds like maybe a troll is living in your tummie! Kidding! I have had plenty of sounds effects in the past. I think tarnalberry has it right, double check everything you ate that day. And consider things besides gluten also. Dairy can cause lots of activity down there too, could it be a dairy troll! :D

I see a lot of people posting with other food issues besides gluten, such as corn, soy, rice, dairy, nightshades etc. So if you are sure it isn't gluten, then probably time to consider other foods as a possible problem. Too much sugar might cause gas too.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
