Other Intolerance After Going Gluten Free?

Hi,

I have read in many places that some poeple seem to develop other food intolerances after starting the gluten-free diet. I tested negative on blood (5 out of 15 required for coeliac diagnosis on IgA) and then negative on biopsy. I have been gluten free since 1st of April regardless and although there was an initial improvement I am beginning to feel similar as I did before starting on the diet. With exception of the aches (which have definately diminished) other symptoms came back: bloating and loose stools, mucous, etc.

Obviously without a diagnosis of gluten intolearance it is very difficult for me to determine if the diet is doing much and whether it is worth continuing. My gastro referred me to a dietitian as he believes I suffer from an intolerance to something - I suppose staying gluten-free before seeing the dietitian won't harm? What were your experiences with other intolerances that surfaced on the gluten-free diet? Did it appear like previous gluten symptoms? How did you go about eliminating foods?

I always knew I had an issue with dairy but after going gluten-free I noticed it more (probably since my gluten symptoms were gone). What I did was stopped eating things with lactose in them (no improvement) and then stopped eating everything with lactose and casein (big improvement). A dietitian isn't going to run tests on you so you can be off gluten. Just be aware that not all dietitians are well versed in Celiac Disease and may not even help you at all. Good luck!

Like the above poster, I always knew I had a bit of a problem with soy (had tested mildly sensitive to it many years ago) and kind of avoided it (no tofu, e.g., but not fanatically). Post gluten free I was eating gluten free processed foods which I had carefully checked for gluten status and not soy. Pretty soon I broke out in a horrible red itchy rash on chest and back and couldn't figure out why until someone here suggested soy. Yep. Now I can't touch it at all or the itchies set in; even the soya lecithin in chocolate sets sit off :(

that's curious; do you have the same reaction to egg-derived lecithin?

I don't recall ever noticing egg-derived lecithin, and I think I would have because lecithin always sets off alarm bells for me when I'm label-reading; it just pops right out of the label :) .

      Welcome to the forum, @SuzanneL! Which tTG was that? tTG-IGA? tTG-IGG? Were there other celiac antibody tests run from that blood draw? Was total IGA measured? By some chance were you already cutting back on gluten by the time the blood draw was taken or just not eating much? For the celiac antibody tests to be accurate a person needs to be eating about 10g of gluten daily which is about 4-6 pieces of bread.

      I've recently received a weak positive tTG, 6. For about six years, I've been sick almost everyday. I was told it was just my IBS. I have constant nausea. Sometimes after I eat, I have sharp, upper pain in my abdomen. I sometimes feel or vomit (bile) after eating. The doctor wanted me to try a stronger anti acid before doing an endoscopy. I'm just curious if these symptoms are pointing towards Celiac Disease?

      I'm sorry to hear about what you're going through. It must be really frustrating and uncomfortable. Have you talked to your healthcare provider about these sudden sweating episodes? It might be helpful to discuss this with them to rule out any other underlying issues or to see if there are specific strategies or treatments that can help manage this symptom. Additionally, staying hydrated and wearing breathable clothing may provide some relief.

      There are supplements available that can help breakdown minor amounts of gluten such as you might experience with cross contamination when dining out and you order gluten free items from a menu. But they will not help when larger amounts of gluten are consumed. One such product that many on this forum attest to as having helped them in this regard is GliadinX.
