Hi, All!

Happy to report that our SF Chronicle has highlighted Celiac Disease in today's issue.

Most of the info printed is available for free via this on-line link (includes recipes):

Great article! And I recognize the quote from this site! :)

What's coolest about this is my parents, friends, brother, etc, all read the Chron so now I can back up my story with this one. You know how some people just see things as more legit when they are printed somewhere...

I was SUPPOSED to be interviewed for this article, but the woman never called, so I never got to talk about teens and celiac. Oh Well, it is still a really good article. My mom went to a meeting there witht the editors and told them that they should do something on celiac. YAY

Great article...longer and more in-depth than most of them..... ;)

I went out and bought a couple of copies. Even better in print. Bummer about not getting interviewed! Well, it was still pretty good. The cover picture of the woman shopping with all the gluten items flying off the shelves at her is pretty good - I'm thinking of hanging it in my cube at work. Or maybe the part that explains what Celiac and gluten-intolerance are. That will help when I'm trying to explain at work why I don't eat the pizza, donuts, cakes, whatever it is they special order for us for fun.

I also forwarded the article to my manager and the company owner (who takes a genuine interest in my dietary needs).

YEP....I plan to show the article to my family members, too...they will take 'it' more seriously, just because it got in the paper in such a 'big' way...

The print version was a lot better than the web link...it included a taste-test of gluten-free pastas (they tested the long, thin versions only)....done by top chefs in SF area - Only 2 got the 'I would buy that' from all 5 chefs...

Here are the results:

83 of 100 pts: Tinkyada Pasta Joy Brown Rice Pasta, spaghetti style.

77 of 100: Mrs. Leeper's Rice Spaghetti

---------------------------------------------

55 pts: Mrs. Leeper's Corn Spaghetti

54: Ancient Harvest (quinoa)

52: Westbrae natural (corn)

43: De Boles (rice)

33: Nutrition Kitchen (soy)

9: Lundberg (rice)

6: Pastariso (rice)

0 points: Bionaturae (Blend)

Great that a member's mom asked the SF Chronicle to do the article!!!

Good job, MOM!

I found the pasta round up to be interesting. I read that section for regular foods from time to time and find that I agree with their choices many times (like I've seen them list the best salamis, the best cheddar cheese, etc). I was surprised though that the Ancient Harvest was as low as it is, but really surprised the Lundberg one is so low. Lundberg rice is a local company and I haven't bought that pasta yet as I have plenty of Tinkyada but am sad to see the low rating. I'll probably get some anyway to try. DeBoles - not horrible but I like it for the Mac and Cheese box convenience, that's it.

Anyway, it was interesting. I would love to see a taste test of many different gluten free foods.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
