Well - I Did It

I did my weekend cooking like you all said.

I made a huge thing of chicken n rice soup with Brown rice. Now, I have a question about brown rice. I like those boil in bags, but Uncle Ben's said whole grain rice instead of brown rice. Whole grain - I don't even like the sound of that, so I got the store brand brown rice.

What does that mean - whole grain rice? Is that safe?

And I also made a big thing of pimento cheese and got gluten-free crackers for it and I made some hamburger patties to cook at work in the microwave, although that looks REALLY gross until you 'clean it up'.

Also, after we went to Red Lobster the other night, we went across the road to McDonalds for ice cream. I couldn't remember - can we eat McDonald's ice cream? I asked for an ingredient list but they looked at me like this:  so I had a coffee. BTW, McDonald's has really GOOD coffee! Can we eat their ice cream?

Rice is a grain, but it is one that celiacs can eat. A few of us are intolerant to rice, but that is a small minority.

White rice is white because the outer layer of bran has been ground off. The bran contains important nutrients, as well as being a source of fiber.

Whole grain rice is rice with the bran still on it, and because of the color it is also called brown rice. They are the same thing.

Did you go to the grocery today?

I didn't know that's what is the difference between white and brown rice. I like the brown rice better, ti has more flavor.

I didn't Karen, I tried to all day, but the very thought of it...... I couldn't.

But, as Scarlet O'Hara says, "tomorrow is a new day"....I will try again tomorrow. I need napkins and Tide, but I just couldn't get up the nerve today. Plus it's 98 here and has been for like a week and the heat falls down into the mountains and stays there, it's just disgusting how hot it gets here.

I promise I will try tomorrow.

Ok. Remember the part about don't think just go quickly. After work tomorrow, stop at the store and go in. Just do it quick. I can't fly there and put a collar and leash on you, drag you into the store, every time you need Tide or TP (and we all need a lot of TP on this forum). :)

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
