Need Help With School Presentation On Celiac

My daughter is going into 2nd grade and I've spoken to the teacher about her celiac and the precautions that need to be taken, not just with food (she knows what she can/can't eat), but with contamination, school supplies (glue, paint, etc..). The teacher was very nice and concerned and asked me to come into the class on the 2nd day of school to give a little talk to explain it to all the kids.

Any suggestions? I want to keep this brief, like 5 minutes. Explain that its not contagious, what happens when she gets sick, what she needs to be careful of. I'm also making gluten-free cookies so they can see/taste that there is no real difference (I can just see one of them yelling at her when she eats a sandwich, not knowing that it is made with gluten-free bread). I want to also hand out a worksheet/coloring page or puzzle. something for them to be able to bring home...any ideas/links for me to check out?

I'm glad the teacher is being so open to this and our school has been wonderful about it (offers gluten-free options for lunch).

Best of luck. At Childrens Hospital Boston where we go they have materials for kids to do class presentations. You may want to contact them or your doctor. They may have prepared materials you can use.

If I had to explain it to 2nd graders,which by the way my daughter is going to be in 1 week I would say:

Celiac disease is an Autoimmune disorder : THAT MEANS....

When a person with Celiac eats a food with Wheat, Rye, Barley and "Oats" in it, they have a reaction in their intestines. The body cannot digest Gluten and fights it. This can cause belly pain, feeling tired a lot , loss of weight, a rash, bathroom problems etc.. whatever details you feel comfortable giving.

Show them a straw as an example of the Villi and when Gluten is eaten the "straw" flattens and can't "drink" all the good vitamins in the food they eat.

When the person stops eating Gluten the Villi "straw" grows back up and can "drink" the vitamins again.

Explain how a person with Celiac will never be able to Gluten again, that there is no cure.

Good luck. Make sure you leave it on a very high positive note for your girl.

      Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

      I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

      Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

      Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

      Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
