  1. I think you can do that in Sweden too, although I haven't tried. I read that screening of blood in Africa shows a similar level of genetic predisposition to coeliac disease as Europe yet the incidence is much lower. So there must be some environmental factor.
  2. Yes, I tried everything to cure my Achilles trouble. Nothing worked. It was very debilitating. It could just be coincidence, but I suspect a connection.
  3. My go-to when I have been glutened is chickpea and leek soup. The leek fibre is very soft and slippery and doesn't irritate my gut. Strangely, I find that a glass of red wine helps - for some reason it seems to stop the burping and reflux for a few hours. Tea with milk is OK for me but coffee, cucumber, sweet pepper, raw salad and anything salty or acidic...
  4. Yes, and there is a common genetic predisposition between coeliac and type 1 diabetes so it is certainly worth my brother being tested. This summer I stopped at a small hotel in Sweden and the owner had coeliac disease. It was the first person I have met in the flesh with the condition, so it was quite interesting talking to her. Her father had coeliac...
  5. It seems that coeliac can affect any part of the body. I used to have painful MTP joints in my feet, and that has resolved on its own. I also used to get chilblains on my toes and haven't had any this year even though my feet have been very cold and wet several times. I have not had dermatitis herpetiformis but I used to get intensely itchy bumps around my...
  6. Thanks for sharing those links. Very interesting. I strongly suspect that my mother had coeliac disease. I cared for her for several years after a stroke, and she had similar physical symptoms to mine. She also had chronic mental health problems and was sectioned several times. Like me she was rake thin. I am trying to get my brother (who has adult onset...
  7. I have been plagued by insertional Achilles tendonitis for 20 years. A used to run and assumed it was an overuse injury and that was it. Curiously it came on not long after my coeliac symptoms become more severe. This year when I went strictly gluten free, the tendonitis began to spontaneously disappear and returned when I went back on gluten for several...
  8. I develop neurological symptoms after eating gluten - memory problems, depression and paranoia which gradually fade over several weeks gluten free. I have read medical reports of it triggering neurological problems as varied as schizophrenia and ataxia. I have been 'glutened' several times this year and just don't risk eating out now.
  9. I don't know how the system works in the US, but in the UK your symptoms would be enough for your GP to refer you to be tested for coeliac disease. For persons under the age of 55, this is now done by blood test alone. People who are symptomatic and have negative blood test, or are 55+ have an additional endoscopy. 1% prevalence in the general population...
  10. I began to experiencing ectopic beats about 13 years ago. I have worn a 24 hour Holter monitor twice and was diagnosed with benign PACs (premature atrial complexes). Stress and alcohol made them worse. Regular exercise made them better. I had 2 episodes when they became worryingly frequent and visited the local hospital. Since I eliminated gluten from my...
  11. I have seen those enzymes. Also, it is possible to get gluten test kits - do you think are reliable? Might help to avoid getting glutened. Sweden surprised me. Gluten-free is a fad diet here - lots of people go gluten-free and vegan because it is fashionable. Hence when you eat out, 'gluten-free' options are often not strictly gluten free. The only success...
  12. Thanks, for the links. The one on coronary artery risk speculates a link to low grade inflammation originating in the gut. I wonder whether eating a gut friendly diet would be beneficial?
  13. Just as a follow up. I must be about 5 months gluten free now. The bloating and burping went away over a period of a couple of days about 3 months after being completely gluten free. Every day I feel a little better and my short term memory problems have gone. Although not completely back to normal, my bowel habits are much better and fatty stools have completely...
  14. In the UK, if you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis and high fracture risk, you will be prescribed a bisphophonate. If there is uncertainty regarding vitamin D and calcium intake, you will also be prescribed these as supplements. Weight bearing exercise is vital to building bone density - walking, running, dancing, weight training. You must stress the...
  15. I developed what was described to me as a 'benign' heart arrhythmia 14 years ago - premature atrial complexes. Ectopic beats that I used to feel - some were quite hard and uncomfortable. Haven't noticed a single one since I have been gluten free for 4 months. I have not yet been formally diagnosed as coeliac but think there is a good chance that I am.
  16. There are studies showing improvement in bone density for people in their 80s. Sounds like you are doing the right stuff. My knees are shot from years of running with poor form. Even if you can't squat, can you manage things like star jumps or stair climbing? Also, low testosterone is a risk factor for osteoporosis, and that can be corrected.
  17. Are you exercising? You need to regularly stress the skeleton to maintain and increase bone density. Regular fast walking, running or weight training. Cycling is no good unless it is rough mountain biking. Join a gym or buy some weights and perform exercises like squats to stress the spine and femoral neck. Absorbing sufficient calcium will have no effect...
  18. There is an interesting case report here: https://www.bmj.com/content/345/bmj.e7982
  19. I have not been formally diagnosed as coeliac yet, but have had the cardinal symptoms and have been on a strict, self-imposed gluten-free diet for almost 6 weeks now. When it first came on 20 years ago, I had severe gastro-intestinal trouble and boughts of diarrhoea for 6 months that gradually settled down over the following 3 years to a single bowel movement...
  20. Scott, The bloating and burping seems to be slowly improving. It could well be fructose that is making me worse, as I seem to be fine with beans and other foods mentioned in your link. I got hold of some probiotic foods that I am going to have with every meal to see if that helps correct the dysbiosis. Posterboy. I think the problem I have is related...
  21. I had assumed that I had SIBO due to the amount of gas I was producing - I was constantly burping. I am planning to go back on gluten for the blood test in late summer. I am feeling really well at the moment and dreading it. Still a little bloated and burping but improving every day. Reflux has pretty much stopped. The only food that seems to make the bloating...
  22. Is this the cause of brain-fog? I just read about death cap mushroom poisoning. Death caps contain a toxin that damages the liver. This leads to fermentation products from the gut building up in the blood and causing hepatic encephalopathy. The treatment involves broad spectrum antibiotics for a few days to kill the gut bacteria and reduce toxins until the...
  23. Thanks for the link. So, some people seem to have it. I read some speculation that it is caused by fermentation products getting into the blood stream and coming out in perspiration.
  24. Hi trents, It would be helpful to have an official diagnosis. I don't relish the thought of going back on gluten for 6 weeks, and I think I will postpone that until after summer. I found a few reports of people developing body odour after eating gluten but it doesn't seem to be that common. Thanks for the information.
  25. Hi Christiana The symptoms began just before I moved from the UK to Sweden. It took me nearly a year to get residence in Sweden as immigration lost my first application, and during this time I couldn't get healthcare. In fact, I flew back to the UK several times to see my family doctor. Then, when I finally got residence I had a couple of terrible consultations...
