kareng replied to CourtneyH's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Stool tests are not considered a valid way to diagnoses Celiac disease at this time. ...Harvard, UCSD, and the American College of Gastroenterology all agree that stool tests are simply not sensitive or specific enough methods in screening for celiac disease. We can say therefore with confidence that the test currently being used by these labs is not... -

You don't eat meat? Cause cider, Hard or regular, is great on pork. Hard cider might give an interesting flavor to cooked apples. Especially like a blueberry apple? Cranberry Apple? -

kareng replied to Monkey0111's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think it's a lot of sugar? A lot of apple juice? If I drank 24 oz of apple juice........ so I try not to drink too many and tend towards the less sweet ones. A fun new drink i ink I have been enjoying is Truely . Let me be back with a link. There is another brand that is the same idea. They are not as strong a flavor as a soda. ... -
ARCHIVED Angry Orchard hard cider
kareng replied to Monkey0111's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There is no reason to stay away from gluten-free beers. It's the ones that say "gluten removed" that may have gluten issues. In then US, gluten removed beers are not allowed to call themselves gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Angry Orchard hard cider
kareng replied to Monkey0111's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Angry orchard and many many other ciders are safe for Celiacs. Like Posterboy said, they are normally gluten-free, beware of that Redd kind - it's actually beer with apple flavor ( it doesn't claim to be gluten-free, it's just tricked some Celiacs) -
Gluten free frozen fries?
kareng replied to GlutenedCN's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Canada has a labeling law - they must list gluten ingredients clearly. -
Gluten free frozen fries?
kareng replied to GlutenedCN's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would buy them - the ones that are just potato and oil and maybe a preservative. -
ARCHIVED Seeking participants for a master's thesis project
kareng replied to H P Thesis's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I agree. I only particiapte in the surveys that I can verify are legit. I would think that this person could talk to the parents of actual kids at a local school or go thru Children's hospitals as part of thier research. This must just be in ther early planning stages of a thesis - to show his/her advisor how he will get subjects? -
ARCHIVED Snacks!
kareng replied to Jherm21's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ok.... maybe the pb with cookie dough could get cookie dough in regular pb...... but I would think the pb is made in the pb machines and some of it is sent to a special mixer to add things like cookie dough. The regular peanut mixer/squisher would completely pulverized the cookie dough with the raw peanuts. And the pretzels or breadsticks packaged in those... -
ARCHIVED Found a LABELED PAIN RELIEVER
kareng replied to BadContrakt's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It is highly unlikely any medication will actually have gluten. But I still like to read the ingredients. And having it labelled gluten-free makes it sooooo much easier than trying to read the small print. Target labels something of thier meds gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Snacks!
kareng replied to Jherm21's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have never seen an orange juice with gluten. Not a pb with gluten. Just read ingredients. That should work for most things. There are plenty of main stream snacks, protein powders, etc. you don't have to spend a fortune -

ARCHIVED Oue teenage daughter is having issues accepting newly diagnosed Celiacs . Help
kareng replied to Jmarshall's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You might want to continue with a therapist. Maybe even one that deals in chronic illness or eating disorders. this will probably get better with time. It may get better when she realizes there are others out there with this illness. -

I think some of the test strips not meant for vinegar based things (I assume a BBQ sauce has a vinegar) - they do not give a true result. You might want to check yours? -
ARCHIVED Confusion, brain fog and memory problems!
kareng replied to Jherm21's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
There currently is someone doing this with more than just test strips - Gluten Free Watchdog. Just a word of caution for you - If you start doing this and publishing your "results", you may be sued. Home tests are not really valid for this type of thing, as there are too many variables that may make them not valid. There are lots of legal... -

ARCHIVED Post diagnosis
kareng replied to Jherm21's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My brother has it. His main concession is to be careful to keep toes and fingers warm. He doesn't take things out of the freezer with out gloves or using a hot pad, don't hold a cold drink for long periods, things like that. Heavy socks and gloves when its very cold - maybe those little warming packs if shovelling snow. -
ARCHIVED anxiety, celiac, problems, doctors, i'm lost
kareng replied to Jm34's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Watch the "brewer's yeast". It is usually not considered gluten free. I usually stay away from it as it can be hard to tell. Here is a good explanation. "The (sometimes) exception to yeast being gluten-free, is with true brewer’s yeast, which is a by-product of beer and thus not considered gluten-free. To make things a little more complicated, ... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Girl Scout Cookies
kareng replied to pschwab's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
if they claim to be " certified", they are testing for gluten. I have had them and was fine. There is a gf brand of thin mint style cookies that are great. I have gotten them at Walmart. I think Trader Joe's has some, too. -

In the US, and probably all of the world, Coke is gluten free. Caramel color is considered gf, even on the off chance it was derived from wheat. It's so highly processed, there is nothing resembling wheat left in the end. Open Original Shared Link " Yes, caramel color in North America is typically gluten-free, although you should... -
ARCHIVED gluten and lactose intolerance
kareng replied to Tiktea's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
What types of things are you looking corn that are gf df? Many gf things are also df. If you live in a bigger city, you might even find a gf bakery that's makes some or all things dairy free. Also, look for gf things that say " vegan" because those would be dairy free. Canyon Bakehouse , a national brand, has at least some that are dairy free. -

ARCHIVED Whatchamacallits
kareng replied to Lauren M's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
No. But you brought up a very old topic (2006) and I wanted people that might now see it, to know that product info on it might be out of date. You can post new info, that's OK. In the US, malt is not considered gluten free as a general rule.
