Celiac.com 03/03/2023 - We get a lot of questions from celiac community members wondering if certain brands and products are gluten-free, especially face and body wash. One question we see a lot is about Dove Body Wash products.

Specifically, is Dove Body Wash gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease?

    Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
The short answer is that Dove Body Wash is naturally gluten-free, and does not contain any gluten ingredients. Here's the lowdown.

It's important for some very sensitive people with celiac disease and/or dermatitis herpetiformis to avoid gluten, including in their beauty products, and that means face and body washes. Here's what we know about Dove Body Wash.

Dove Does Not Specifically Label Any of Their Body Washes as Gluten-Free

According to the Dove website, Dove Body Wash ingredients include:

    • Water (Eau), Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate, Sodium Methyl Lauroyl Taurate, Sodium Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Lauric Acid, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Glycerin, Fragrance (Parfum), Stearic Acid, Palmitic Acid, Hydroxystearic Acid, Glyceryl Stearate, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Benzoate, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Undecylenoyl Glycine, Capryloyl Glycine, Citric Acid, Sodium gluconate, AlphaIsomethyl Ionone, Benzyl Alcohol, Citronellol, Coumarin, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene, Linalool.

According to the label, Dove Body Wash contains NONE of the following cosmetic ingredients that may contain gluten:

    • Cyclodextrin, Dextrin
    • Dextrin Palmitate
    • Hydrolyzed Malt Extract
    • Hydrolyzed Oat Flour
    • Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein
    • Hydrolyzed wheat Flour
    • Hydrolyzed Wheat Gluten
    • Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch
    • Secale Cereale ((Rye) Seed Flour
    • Tocopherol Acetate (if made from wheat)
    • Tritidcum Vulgare (Wheat Germ Extract)
    • Triticum Vulgare
    • (Wheat) Germ Extract
    • Triticum Vulgare (Wheat Gluten)
    • Triticum Wheat Amino Acids
    • Wheat Germ Glycerides
    • Wheat Germanidopropalkonium Chloride
    • Wheat Protein
    • WheatgermamidopropylI Ethydimonium Ethosulfate
    • Yeast Extract

Dove Body Wash is made without gluten ingredients, and is likely safe for those with celiac disease and/or dermatitis herpetiformis. As always, read labels, avoid gluten ingredients, and choose carefully.

Apparently, as is the case with many substances and even some medications, a small amount of gluten is passed into the blood epidermaly, an issue for at least some celiacs.
