What Do You Order At Non-Chain Chinese Restaurants?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering - for those of you who do eat out, what do you order?  They had rice noodles and pad thai on the menu, but I was too afraid to get it.  I ended up with steamed rice and steamed broccoli - asked them to make sure that there was no sauce, and to be careful bringing it out.  I feel fine, but who knows.  Are there other options?

I haven't gone into a Chinese restaurant other than PF Chang's in years, but when I did I ordered vegetables with white sauce, which is made with corn starch.

I love Chinese and Thai food.  I ask the waiter/waitress what ingredients they use to prepare the dish.  We were at a restaurant Saturday and could not eat there.  They used flour in every sauce and breading of meats.  There was not one dish gluten free.  I was going to settle for white Jasmine rice but rice will raise my sugar levels to the max.  I offered to sit and drink water but my family wouldn't agree to that. . . we left the restaurant.  I have DH and maybe the visual of Celiac makes them more aware of my condition.

We have an Asian restaurant close by that uses corn starch instead of flour to 'batter' their meats.  They do not use soy on any of their dishes.  They serve white and brown rice and sweeten their tea with honey.  I love being able to eat there.

I would suggest you call around to see if any restaurants serve gluten free dishes.

Good luck!
