Hashimoto's and Celiac / NCGS - are they connected?

A close family member has hashimotos but her doctors have never mentioned gluten to her as a potential trigger. They also have her on a long term course of PPI which I'm very sceptical about.

As some of you can imagine I tend to see gluten behind everything and as I had thyroid related symptoms when I was on gluten which have resolved on the diet and know from this forum that there's a lot of evidence that there's a connection:

https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/search/?&q=hashimotos

I want her to request celiac testing and then, if negative (as mine was incidentally), trial the gluten-free diet. Are there any good sources online which I could point her too concerning the link between the two conditions? I found this:

https://thyroidpharmacist.com/articles/top-7-hashimotos-food-myths/

but I wondered if there's a good site that anyone would recommend?

Many thanks for any advice you can offer or experiences you can relate :)

Matt

Thanks :)

just had a quick read. It reminded me that I'm  a little ambivalent about Chris Kresser's work. I think he creates some good content, I spent a fair bit of time reading his blog when I first started putting my own case together, but I'm not always convinced that his conclusions are fully justified by the evidence, he's a little too quick to generalise and embrace claims that may not fully stack up, entero labs stool testing for example. That said, he does cite sources so that will give me something to go on. Thanks again :)

My son was borderline Hashimoto's. He tested out of range on his TSH. We removed gluten from his diet a week after having been tested and he was retested four months later. His thyroid is now within range. I plan to retest again. I have five family members with Hashimoto's and my son is suspected NCGS and myself celiac (hope to get positive biopsy via DH). Like you, I very much question the correlation between gluten sensitivity and thyroid syndrome.

Jmg, I agree about Kresser. I really like the information and citations, many times scratching my head about the conclusions drawn.  But a good place to start.
