Paper Mache

Just wondering if anyone has had to do a paper mache project and how you approached it. gluten-free flour is way too expensive to use, and I am very leary about soaking my hands in regular flour (not to mention getting it everywhere-it is so messy!) Luckily, my husband is helping out, so I am sitting out. Has anyone had a reaction after making paper mache?

I used watered down elmers school glue to make papier mache... I would not be excited about having to dip my hands in flour... nope... not at all...

At work I am often doused in flour for making pizzas, breading chicken, or thousands of other items, plus I am a Pasta Chef, will contact with Gluten have adverse effects or does ingesting it only affect a person?

unfortunatly for you, yes contact with it can cause problems. The reason for this is that flour particles are so fine and can fly up in the air and into your nose and mouth. Once they are in your mucous membranes they can be ingested and even ONE MOLECULE can cause damage.

A friend of mine that has Celiac, has been working in bulk foods at the store she works at, and her Dr. said the reason she is not getting better is because she is inhaling the flour (gluten) on a daily basis. So... after the first of the year she will be looking for another job.

Ouch, if you have celiac disease, you better find yourself a new job, this one is likely (literally) going to kill you eventually!

Ditto to what everywone else said. I got let go from my job because the management would not let me wear a dust mask, so I'm looking for a new job, as I got sick a lot! please, look for a new job!

I just substitute rice flour for regular flour when making paper machie. I use rice flour and then add water to get it really thin and dip newspaper strips into the mixture and put on balloon. It hards nicely in a day or two.

I can't believe they would not let you wear a mask! Is this the same place that made you work in the bakery even though you were getting sick? Thats crazy. Isn't there some law against that? I think if you need to wear a mask then they cant let you go over it. Am I wrong? :unsure:

      Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

      I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

      Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

      Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

      Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
