I have to brag just a bit because I'm fortunate enough to have a three year old that's not a very picky eater. He'll eat just about anything - broccoli, salads, cauliflower....all the stuff many three year olds turn their nose up at. I was shopping yesterday and came across some gluten-free, yeast-free bread by Ener-G. I wasn't real confident it would taste good, but thought I'd give it a shot anyway. When I brought it home Ryan asked what it was, and I said "bread." He knows he isn't normally allowed to eat bread (and I don't normally even keep it in the house), so he was pretty excited and wanted to try it. He took one bite and said "I don't like it." and then handed me the piece that was in his mouth. I thought he was just being picky, so I took a bite....and immediately spit it into the sink ! It was HORRIBLE !! It had the most bizarre flavor I've ever tasted...and yet it was devoid of flavor at the same time. It was very much like trying to eat a sponge ! DH, Ryan and I had a good laugh - and then I tossed out the rest of the loaf.

I'm finding that because maneuvering around the gluten-free foods can be a little daunting sometimes, it really helps if you keep a sense of humor about it. :P

Not an option for us, unfortunately....my son is allergic to cow's milk & eggs as well. :( Otherwise I would have tried that.

I make breadcrumbs out of icky bread. I bought a loaf of Ener-G Tapioca bread just because I wanted to try it, which actually isn't that bad. But it ended up not being eaten. I found a trick for the breadcrumbs, which I posted on a new thread.

Oh, too bad you hadn't been warned about Ener-G breads. They are inedible unless toasted. Then they are edible with butter/margarine and jam.

The other way to make it palatable is to pan-fry it with margarine/butter and a sprinkle of garlic powder. I don't know what this does to the bread, but it's the only way I can get my 11 year old to eat it. It really doesn't taste bad at all. I serve it with tomato soup since he and I can't have dairy.

Do you know that kinkinnik breads have a gluten free, soy free, egg free, dairy free bread. He might like that. Otherwise, corn bread homemade is a delicious option.

No, I didn't know that. Thanks for that tip. I haven't seen that bread, I'll have to look more closely and see if I come across it.

If it's called "Robin's" something, please don't waste your money. It's just as bad, if not worse, than the Ener-G. I think they substitute powdered rubber for the gluten and eggs.

Have you tried the Ener-G english muffins (I think they are tapioca starch something or other)? My sister bought me those and I have not tried them yet.

Thanks!

I haven't tried the English muffins.

I suggest Kinnikinnick breads or anything else they make. They bread looks like regular loaf, and once you toast it or even microwave it for a couple minutes its amazingly good, it dont break apart or nothing--stays soft. I live on their products. I'm probably one of their top customers already

They are a Canadian company but I know they do ship to US (not sure what the price difference is in products since i'm from canada..)

Hope this helps!!

Ener-G breads are disgusting! I like the Cybros rice rolls and there is a millet bread at a local store that I get that tastes like regular bread too. It was hard to find the good breads with all the disgusting gluten free breads that taste like cardboard.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
