Dont Count Out The "little Guys"

My local "grocery chain" is safeway, cant say as I ever liked how it was controlled by the "main office" and since going gluten-free my opinion has gone downhill.

I had mentioned before "could you please carry this product?" the managers answer "sorry ma'am the "main office" decides what products we carry"

After becoming a gluten-free shopper I started getting nervous about gluten-free products sitting next to ones that could CC.... "sir some people are allergic to wheat and gluten could you perhaps have a section for gluten-free like you do for some other allergies?" "sorry ma'am the shelves are arranged according to what the "main office" decides" So the pure gluten is indeed still sitting on the shelf right between the potato flour and the Flax meal and yes somewhere one of the bags developed a small leak as there is a fine white dusting on all of them. Needless to say I have not purchased anything from that area as yet.

Yesterday I "went to town" to pay bills and buy a few groceries. As I am a sales ad shopper I had a list of every item I would be getting at each of the 3 local stores, safeway being the largest by far.

I started with the one without any items needing to be kept cool, he was the "middle sized guy" good selection for his size found a couple new things I hadnt seen before.

This month I had nothing to get from the "little guy in town" but stopped anyways because my BIL found these cool little dried fruit packages I wanted a couple so I stopped to look for them.

WOW! what a find! There right near the veggie section is Bobs Red Mill gluten-free flour! and look there a whole dang section of gluten-free flours! dried fruits and veggies! cereals even! its like 5 feet long! the health food store doesn't even carry that much and they're 60 miles away!

I am totally blown away, normally I dont shop there as they don't have a good selction and the prices are outrageous! Changed my tune in a hurry so folks......

Don't ignore the little grocery store in your town, he may surprise you by having a brain of his own and be able too decide what products he stocks!

I'm with you on that one too. I have a little health food store nearby. They are really big on vitamins. They don't have a huge gluten free section, but the flours and mixes they carry are so much cheaper. Each time I go in they seem to have a little more gluten free products.

Sounds like you are in the UK. With blood numbers that high, I thought docs in UK would give an official diagnosis without the biopsy. You should ask about that, so you can get support faster.  I'd try to find and print out anything that supports that in your country, get another appointment and take all of it with you. Even in the US now, some docs are doing this, my 19 year old step granddaughter got an official diagnosis here in US with just blood results a few months ago.

Is soy sauce in Korea also made from wheat like it usually is in US? I'd be concerned that even if asking about gluten, they would not be aware of or think of some like that.

That's a good idea. It can at least establish the potential for developing celiac disease and can help people decided between a celiac diagnosis and NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity). And it doesn't require a gluten challenge and can be had without a doctor's prescription.

I have my endoscopy on Thursday, has anyone had the procedure done with a cough? I don't have a continuous cough, but every now and then throughout the day I have sort of coughing episodes. They are a lot better than they were but I called endoscopy and they said to speak to my gp and my gp got back to me and said I need to ask endoscopy if its ok if I have it done still.  Help!

Thank you so much, everyone. For the moment my doctor just has me taking iron but hopefully we can reconnect soon. I'm going to look into genetic testing, too. Great advice all around and I appreciate it--and you can bet I'm going off the PPIs!
