Celiac, Thyroid And Ibs

Hi,

I was diagnosed with Celiac in 2005, thyroid in 1999 and IBS in the '60's. and have been following a gluten free diet since then. Been feeling fine for the most part.

I also have IBS and Hashimodos thyroid and have recently changed my thyroid medication due to high antibodies. I am currently on Thyralor. I was on Armour for nine years.

I have been experience more digestive symptoms in the last two weeks and did not know if there is also a seasonal aspect to celiac. More hot and humid weather seems to alter my digestion.

I have taken lomotil to help control the spasms and the constant need to be in the bathroom, but the rumbling and grumbling continues in my gut.

Does anyone else have periods of time when digestive issues come back even though nothing in your diet has changed.

Any feedback would be appreciated, because this stuff makes me crazy and anxious which does not help. I am also a vegetarian, so my diet is already very restricted. Not sure what else I can eliminate.

Thanks,

Marty

Hi Marty,

The very first thing that comes to mind is that during the warmer months people eat A LOT more fruit. Many people have trouble digesting too many fruits (me included). So this is where I would look.

Also the warmer more humid months make produce "ripe" for fungus and bacteria to thrive and grow. You will want to wash all of your fruits and veggies VERY WELL. I use two spray bottles (1 with vinegar and 1 with peroxide). This combo has been studied at major universities and has been proven to kill nearly all harmful pathogens on produce. Then you rinse it off with water. And there is no worries if you dont get it all off as small amount of peroxide will not hurt.

I too have thyroid. I am currently on Armour and doing pretty well on it.

I was a vegetarian for about 7 years and Vegan for a few of them. But I must tell you that my health improved by leaps and bounds when I added just a little meat back in. My digestion improved, my hair got thicker and I had more energy. I believed that not eating meat was healthier. For me, this was not the case. If the reason you do not eat meat is for "health" reasons, this is just something to consider.

If you have ethical reasons for being a vegetarian. I totally understand and support you.

I personally was able to get over the moral/ethical issue when I learned that tons of animals are killed to plow/till/cultivate/harvest a field of produce. That heavy equipment kills so many small animals (field mice, moles, etc.) and destroys habitats for nesting birds, foxes, etc......all in order for me to live. But this is my own personal understanding of life and I support whatever you believe is best for you.

Feel I should be thorough in my responses......

Hope this helps!

I've gotten more food intolerances as time has gone on. I've discovered nuts, chocolate and seeds are an issue with me now as well as gluten. Fortunately I find a diet of meat and veggies seems to make everything settle down and it is the base from which I add other foods and test them out.

Thank you for your responses. I have been a vegatarian for over 35 years. For ethical reasons, so change is not something that is possible for me.

Sometimes with the other health issues I don't know if the thyroid is acting up, the medication, or whether the IBS is kicking in. It is all very frustrating.

I have been feeling good for several years, but do have periods of time when things get a little off.

I also have structural issues where my lower back and hip go out and need to be realigned. I just really feel down when stomach issues come up. It has been like this for most of my life and sometimes it is discouraging.

Thanks,

Marty

I have just found out that the new thyroid medication contains Lactose and corn starch. I wonder if that would have an impact on the digestive system.

Thoughts.

I was going to tell you that your new medication contains lactose (I am lactose intolerant). Do you normally use cows milk, cheese, yogurt, etc. (lactose) in your diet without problems? I am sure you noticed that your old thyroid medication does not contain lactose. The Lamotil you are taking also contains corn starch - do corn products normally bother you? - Just some thoughts.

I do not normally do milk, yogurt (cheese does seem to bother me) so I don't know if there is a problem. Years ago when I did drink some milk, I always bought the lactose free. I don't normally do dairy, except some cheese..

I've been eating mostly rice and don't know if I am becomng allergic to that. Can celiac's develop allergies to the limited grains that are permitted.

Thanks.

See if your doctor can perscribe a different Thyroid medication that is dairy (lactose and casien free) as well as gluten free. Try that and see if all goes well before you start looking for other grains - it's worth the investigation! Good Luck!

I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?

Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.

My daughter has celiac disease and has had for a long time. She fell loses strictly gluten-free diet and recently got rid of all cutting boards in any gluten in her house at all. She just had a stool test and it came back showing of gigantic response to gluten in her diet. What could be going on since she doesn't eat any gluten and is very careful about any kind of hidden glue? Help!
