Breathlessness Question

Presto Rookie

Hi, I am still awaiting test results, but based on the gluten free diet I don't ever want to eat anything with gluten again.

I am still learning what not to eat, and I did get glutened this weekend. Not as bad as when I first went off the diet as a challenge, but I still feel yucky.

The symptom I want to ask about is the feeling of breathlessness. I do have reactive airway disease, but my inhaler doesn't seem to help this feeling this time. Is it maybe just a result of the bloating? No room inside for breathing?

I have scared myself a little by reading up on various related disorders, seeing that MS and gluten intolerance are not uncommon to find together. There is an MS symptom called the MS hug that sounds a lot like what I'm experiencing. Intercostal muscle spasms that restrict chest wall movement. Some pain in my back left ribs, and general tightness. I don't feel like I'm breathing deeply enough or often enough, and I can't stand to be hugged/squeezed by my poor husband. (I told him it's okay to hug my head, and I'm short, so this works as a compromise for now...)

I also have bladder spasms and frequent UTIs (which I saw listed as symptoms of MS) so I'm thinking I should bring this up with the doctor, but of course they will think I am paranoid or hypochondriac for reading all this stuff online and freaking myself out.

*goes to hit the inhaler again*

Any input, anyone? Thanks in advance.

When I was a teenager I used to get those muscle spasms too, the dr's called it 'intercostal neuritis' or something like that.

Exercise and stretching help me. (I hate taking anything) B)

Also, when I first started having a severe overgrowth with Candida (2002?) I would get breathless (I said it felt like my breath was taken away) -maybe that is one culprit. I without a doubt started feeling a lot stronger after a year of heavy anti-fungals. Have not had that problem since!! :) Used to get regular UTI's too (from the Candida)

You can eat garlic... I used to make tea from bulk oregano leaves. (2 tb oregano, 1 cup boiling water. Steep 10 minutes)

Wow she was just playing with play dough yesterday and I actually thought i wonder if I have to worry about play dough! But no meltdowns yesterday. Is your daughter celiac or just gluten sensitive/intolerant? Your son still had to go on Ritalin after going gluten free?

I had the endoscopy with biopsy done. I have gastritis and duodenitis at this point. The biopsy should provide the cause of the inflammation findings. How common are these findings when Celiac is the ultimate culprit?

Welcome to the forum @cookiesyum, I lasted on staton for about a month before getting so weak I had to stop.   Switched to Nicotinic Acid and I posted the results in a previous post.  Instead of getting sicker and weaker on the statin I feel I am improving day by day.  Nicotinic Acid was first used for cholesterol in 1955.

According to research, consuming gluten can potentially trigger sudden mood swings and increased irritability in children, particularly those with gluten sensitivity or celiac disease, making them more likely to have tantrums or display behavioral issues; this is because gluten can trigger an immune response in the body, potentially impacting brain function and neurotransmitter levels.  When my son was diagnosed in 1976 when he was weaned his doctor told us that at 5 years old his kindergarden teacher would beg us to put him on Ritalin.  And so it did happen.  My son was on Ritalin though high school.  In the morning he was a devil who could not put on his socks. Half an hour after the morning dose he was an angel wanting to help mom get ready.  Talk about Jekyll and Hyde! Dr Danel Amen could be a good resource for you.

Yes, it certainly can! My daughter has a reaction from just playing with Playdough. She doesn't get GI symptoms at first, just psychological mostly. It can get really bad. It's like night/day behavior. My daughter is eight, but started showing signs around 6.
