Getting Lots Of Colds Since Going Gluten Free

Hi! I've been gluten free for about 6 weeks now, and have none of the symptoms that prompted me to figure out that celiac may be my problem. Before going gluten free, I NEVER got colds. The last time I had gotten sick was almost 3 years ago and I believe that was more of a cleansing reaction when I started to see a naturopath and he started me on an herbal therapy and accupuncture for my adrenals. Before that it had been a good 1-2 years before I had gotten sick with a cold.

Since going gluten free 6 weeks ago, I have gotten 4 colds! It seems I get better and I'm good for a couple of days and then I get sick again. Has anyone else experienced this after going gluten free? Any ideas or suggestions? I'm starting to wonder which is worse--feeling sick every time I eat, or having a perpetual cold! I would really appreciate anyone's input on this :)

I was reading posts from the bottom up and responded to this issue in your other thread :)

Thank you! I forgot that I replied to someone's post about that a while back. I need to look for that again, since it has gotten worse since then.

Mushroom, I'm trying to find that other post. I remember it was someone else's thread and I commented on it because I was experiencing the same thing. I'm still new to all this and I haven't figured out an easy way to find that thread. If you happen to know of any shortcuts to find it, I would really appreciate it. I am in the midst of one of those colds and my head feels like its about to explode! I just can't figure out why I'm getting so many colds. Thank you so much :)

Are they colds or sinus infections? If your held feels like it's about to explode it could be a sinus infection, or you could have developed new allergies. I used to get a lot of colds and sinus infections before going gluten-free. I've been gluten-free for nearly 3 months and have only had one cold, and it cleared up much quicker than in the past -- sorry to rub it in ;). If your colds are recurring and/or lasting for more than a week you should head to the DR to see if it is a sinus infection, perhaps you need antibiotics to help clear it up. Your body is in a state of "shock" right now, getting used to a very different diet and busily healing itself, but once you're over the "hump" you'll likely feel MUCH better :D

Good luck,

Jillian

Thanks Jillian! Yes, I think you are right about the sinus infection. Its a combination of that and bronchitis. I went to the doctor last week and got an antibiotic, which I took and it seem to knock it out, but now its back much worse than before! I might need a different one, although I hate taking antibiotics and haven't needed one for over 2 years. It just seems strange that I would be getting sicker after going gluten-free, but you may have a point about my body busily healing itself, so I hope I can get over the "hump" soon. Thanks again for your reply! :)

Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.

My daughter has celiac disease and has had for a long time. She fell loses strictly gluten-free diet and recently got rid of all cutting boards in any gluten in her house at all. She just had a stool test and it came back showing of gigantic response to gluten in her diet. What could be going on since she doesn't eat any gluten and is very careful about any kind of hidden glue? Help!

I think sometimes the pain described here can be a result of a sort of 'perfect storm' of contributing factors.  Recently I had an appalling bout of lower back pain, lower burning gut pain and what felt like cramps.  I then started to think about what could have caused it and I realised it was several things that had set it off: I'd been carrying heavy luggage (back strain); I had been sitting down in a car for too long and wearing a tight belt (I have pudendal nerve issues and sacroiliac issues and this exacerbates the pain), and I had bloating and burning pain in my colon caused by eating too much soy, latte and caffeine, I guess putting further pressure in the lower abdomen.  I had this same pain prior to my diagnosis and a couple of years post-diagnosis, I'd quite forgotten how unpleasant it was.

HI @Kirbyqueen That's great news your insurance will be kicking in soon.  Sorry to see that you have been dealing with this for six months now, but I do hope you have managed to find some relief with some of the suggestions in the meantime. Perhaps come back and let us know what the doctor says. Cristiana

I agree, and hopefully your doctor will contact you soon about the next step, which will likely be an endoscopy to confirm your diagnosis. Do you have celiac disease symptoms?
