Hate Looking 'pregnant'

I was recently diagnosed with celiac disease, And have been ALMOST gluten free for over a month. I recently had a sandwich though and my stomach is now huge and hard! I was even asked when I was due. Has this happened to anyone else? On top of that I have been in the worst pain of my life.. I have constant cramps and lots of pressure on the bottom area of my stomach. Is this normal? Has it happened to anyone else? I'm freaking out.. PLEASEEEE HELP!

This happens to me if I get glutened. My husband says I look 5 months pregnant. Usually as soon as I *ahem* get cleared out It goes away. Your intestines are inflamed, and your body is confused, give it some time. Hope you feel better!!

I second the probiotics. I looked 8 months for 3 months solid. After a year, I decided maybe I didn't need the pro b's daily, so I stopped. Within 2 days I was back up to 5 months. I think I will need them for life. Hang in there!

are the PBs in yogurt supposed to...ah...clean you out? Im just wondering, I had some vanilla yogurt yesterday and I was in and out of the bathroom all day. Not glutened, just...self cleaning, maybe?

HAHA! I left for England when I was 18- they serve ALOT of gluteney products. I lived there for 4 years. So when I left, I was super skinny, when I came back my mother was CONVINCED I was pregnant. I would assure her NOPE not pregnant. Now I live in the same province as her. I see her every few months and she is still greets me with the look of "I swear you are pregnant". Nope, apparently all those years of appearing pregnant, turns out I'm a little tubby from eating all those fattening foods and bloated from the gluten. The bloating has gone away with the gluten free diet, still tubby but that will go away in time. I was daft and ate a sandwich on Canada Day. On the weekend, I went out to a bar wearing a nice dress and one of the guys had the nerve to ask if I was pregnant. The shame :ph34r: The tummy problem has had ME convinced I'm pregnant soooo many times my fiancee doesn't even blink when I suggest I could be pregnant to him. (I HAD super irregular periods, does NOT help with the preggers paranoia. Nor does the anxiety and paranoia that comes with eating gluten.)

It'll go away.

OMG! Me too!!! I have clothes sizes from 4-8 in the closet. It's crazy. I am pretty consistent these days, but before going gluten-free I stayed so bloated I needed bigger pants. And not just bigger pants, but bigger belly pants...like the kind with the elastic banding for pregnant ladies. :o

I know!! It sucks!! I'm very small framed (only 5' 2") so it looked awful! And now whenever I get glutened I swell up the same way....I have my regular pants and my 'glutened' pants

Is there anyway to make the pregnant appearance/ feeling go away quicker? I'm already doing the probiotics and they're not really having any effect. And I can't do dairy - Gah! I hate this!!! I dance ballet and it's just awful!!! I can't imagine being like this for months... any advice? :(

Gluten doesn't just swell up my stomach; I swell all over. My face, hands, joints, you name it. It's awful. It goes away again. For me, the longest it's ever taken is 3-4 days.

The fastest way I have ever found to debloat is to low carb it. Meat & greens only. No sugar, dairy, or grains. 3 days tops no matter how bad it's gotten. I've done it dozens of times.

I swell all over too. I got glutened and then went salsa dancing. Some guy came up and asked me if I was pregnant and when I got upset he kept insisting! It was horrific.

I am all swollen now from my awful glutening last Friday and I have my monthly so it's even worse.

      Very good pizzeria with small dining room in back of the restaurant. The owner's daughter has celiac & they have gluten free pizza & a gluten free menu. Some items from the regular menu can be made gluten free also. They have a lunch menu which we ordered from & my chicken with spinach & mozzarella over gluten-free penne was delicious. They also have Tuesday night pasta specials & Thursday night chicken pasta specials. We plan on going back for dinner soon.

      @Aretaeus Cappadocia and @Russ H thank you both for your helpful advice and information. I haven't seen a GI in years. They never helped me aside from my inital diagnosis. All other help has come from my own research, which is why I came here. I will be even more careful in the future.

      @nancydrewandtheceliacclue, you are welcome. After looking at this thread again, I would like to suggest that some of the other comments from @Russ H are worth following up on. The bird-bread may or may not be contributing to what you are experiencing, but it seems unlikely to be the whole story. If you have access to decent healthcare, I would write down your experiences and questions in outline form and bring this to your Dr. I suggest writing it down so you don't get distracted from telling the Dr everything you want to say while you have their attention.

      @Russ H, I partly agree and partly disagree with you. After looking at it again, I would say that the slick graphic I posted overestimates the risk. Your math is solid, although I find estimates of gluten in white bread at 10-12% rather than the 8% you use. Somewhat contradicting what I wrote before, I agree with you that it would be difficult to ingest 10 mg from flinging bread.  However, I would still suggest that @nancydrewandtheceliacclue take precautions against exposure in this activity. I'm not an expert, I could easily be wrong, but if someone is experiencing symptoms and has a known exposure route, it's possible that they are susceptible to less than 10 mg / day, or it is possible that there is/are other undetected sources of exposure that together with this one are causing problems. At any rate, I would want to eliminate any exposure until symptoms are under control before I started testing the safety of potentially risky activities.       @Aretaeus Cappadocia thank you for your reply and the link, that is very helpful to get a visual of just how small of an amount can cause a reaction. I know I am not consuming gluten or coming into contact with gluten from any other source. I will stop touching/tossing bread outside! My diet has not changed, and I do not have reactions to the things I am currently eating, which are few in number. My auto immune reaction just seems so severe. The abdominal pain is extreme. It takes a lot out of me. I guess I will be this way for the rest of my life if I ever happen to come into contact with gluten? I appreciate the help.
