I Glutened Her Again.

Daughter bought her dinner last night at the grocery store. She had dance classes all night be had a break for dinner. Most of the other kids buy their food and she want to too. Last night I talked her into taking a package of chicken salad and crackers. She gave away the crackers. That way I know she had protein. She bought some mandarin oranges and a bag of marshmallows to share.

Tonight she wanted to buy again. Again I talked her into taking something from home to round out the meal. So she chose a bag of grilled chicken pieces. I had two bags. One plain. One Southwestern style. She chose the Southwestern style. She opened the bag and was going to put some in a sandwich bag. Then she began screaming, "Wheat! Soy! Wheat! Soy! And I ATE it!"

I ran to the kitchen. Sure enough, there was wheat and soy in there. Soy is not so much an issue but I try not to buy things that contain outright soy such as soybeans or soy protein. Soy lecithin is fine. And I will sometimes buy things with soybean oil if there are no other options.

The chicken I bought was Tyson. I could have sworn that I bought this before and it was safe. But maybe that was Foster Farms? The plain kind *is* fine. Just chicken in there. The chicken comes in a green package and it says something like, "Same product, new package".

Now I feel bad. I try to check each package each time. Apparently I dropped the ball on that one. I was in a bit of a panic because when I bought the chicken we were under the threat of a major snow storm. Actually it didn't happen. We did get some snow for a day but I don't think that was even when I bought the chicken. I can't remember now. It was a couple of weeks ago, I think.

She ate one bite. There wasn't much I could do, but I told her to rinse her mouth out. I didn't have any Benydryl and didn't want to give her any because it would make her really sleepy. She doesn't have celiac. She has an allergy. It is not the life threatening kind. Her normal symtpoms if she ingests wheat are stomach pains and maybe the big D. But as we drove to the dance studo she said her tongue was itching. I feel bad now.

I really must stick to the rule that I made when she was diagnosed. Read every package every time.

I'm getting so paranoid about things that I am afraid to feed my dd anything even when I've read the labels. I keep thinking I am missing something. It has definitely made me switch to less and less processed foods. Not much you can do, but move forward.

Well, you either qualify for 'worst mother of the year', or 'completely human'. :)

It's a good reminder to everyone that things change and we can never assume...

I glutened myself with some peanut butter cookies I made at home last week. I used a new brand of peanut butter (Crazy Richard) that I hadn't had before. I doesn't list any gluten ingredients but it sure got me good.

A while back I bought some tuna packed in water. Got it home and ate some and got sick. Read the ingredients and it had soy in it. Soy isn't water people! Dang tuna.

Sorry you got stuck Julie, it happens to all of us sometimes.

Yeah. I screwed up on the tuna too. I got the kind in broth not realizing that there were peas in the broth. As well as soy. She is no longer allergic to soy. But she is allergic to peas.

Now we get canned tuna at Costco. The kind in water. It's just water.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
