Celiac Vs Gluten Intolerance

Let me confirm my findings on the difference.

Celiac can be tested for while gluten intolerance cannot?

Both issues may or may not have the same symptoms?

When going gluten free, one may feel some relief but not fully healthy?

Is that right?

So, I went to the doctors last Wednesday, July 11. After the doctor's I decided to go wheat free anyway. I have felt some relief but not a lot which I understand may take awhile. I'm also lactose intolerant and that I have eliminated from my diet a while and have felt relieved! So I know my bloating, gasiness, fatty yuckiness, exhaustion, and irritability is not from lactose. Today, I got the results and tested negative for celiac. However, doctor did not say I would be sensitive to gluten. Today, I didn't have lunch on me and was STARVING and went for a small plate of Ramen noodles. Talk about stomach gas! ugh. Can anyone say this is gluten intolerance?

In answer to your 1st question: Non-celiac gluten intolerance can be tested for or you can self-diagnose with a food elimination diet. I like the IgG test for non-celiac gluten intolerance offered by (Company Name Removed - They Spammed This Forum and are Banned) or the food intolerance test offered through (Company Name Removed - They Spammed This Forum and are Banned) or LEAP that measures changes in white blood cells. False negatives are common for celiac disease. What type of test were you given for celiac disease by your doctor?

In answer to your 2nd question: Yes, both celiac and non-celiac gluten intolerance can have the same symptoms. There are over 200 symptoms associated with gluten intolerance that range from osteoporosis to anemia to infertility to digestive disturbances to neurological symptoms and more.

In answer to your 3rd question--yes, going gluten free doesn't assure full relief of symptoms whether celiac or non-celiac gluten intolerant. If celiac, it is possible that the villi are too worn down to recover though that is rare. Usually within a year, the villi regrow. With either celiac or non-celiac gluten intolerance, it can take some time before gut integrity is restored and health returns. Also, with both, other food intolerances often play a role as the body mistakes other food proteins for gluten or other intolerances are developed as a result of leaky gut syndrome. Additionally, other health conditions can develop as a result of consuming gluten when intolerant to it for some time that can cause other health issues such as thyroid problems and adrenal problems. Additionally, there are sometimes co-existing health concerns that may mimic digestive disturbances of gluten intolerance such as parasites, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, or candida overgrowth.

You did the right thing. If you test negative for celiac disease, that is not the final word. It is possible that you had a false negative and could follow-through with additional testing or that you have non-celiac gluten intolerance. Regardless of whether you opt for additional testing or not, you learned through the elimination diet that you are gluten intolerant (unless it was a different food that you reacted to when you ate lunch).

Regardless of whether you are celiac or non-celiac gluten intolerant the treatment is the same--strict adherence to a gluten free diet.
