Celiac And Lactose Intolerance

Recommended Posts

I heard that lactose intolerance is a side-effect of celiac disease. Within a month of going gluten free my lactose intolerance went away. I'm going back on gluten so I can get tested properly, but wondering if anyone is aware of any other conditions that would mimic this? (ie the absence of gluten permits the eating of dairy products). I am trying to figure out the way forward from a negative blood test.

Celiac disease damages the villi in the small intestine. The villi produce lactase, the enzyme required to digest lactose (milk sugar). If this is the cause of lactose intolerance, then once the villi heal you will again be able to digest lactose. Symptoms of lactose intolerance include excessive gas and diarrhea.

Some of us are intolerant to casein (milk protein). This is different, and is unlikely to go into remission on a gluten-free diet.
