Extreme Depression As A Reaction

I had a TERRIBLE reaction to the "Food Should Taste Good" sweet potato chips, and I'm not sure why.

Ingredients: Stone Ground Corn, High Oleic Sunflower Oil and/or Safflower Oil, Sweet Potato, Corn Bran, Evaporated Cane Juice, Sea Salt

I've eaten these chips on several different occasions, but I always had something else I blamed the reaction on. Twice I thought I had been glutened, but this past week it would have been highly unlikely so I looked back over and realized they were all times I had eaten these chips.

The reaction each time started out as strong brain fog, which grew worse every day and made me really angry and severely depressed, to the point of suicidal ideation. I got extremely tired and had bad stomach pains, bloating, muscle pain/weakness and diarrhea. I took a charcoal yesterday while in agony after eating the chips, and half an hour later the depression began to lift. Today was the first day I didn't eat them and my stomach is still a little messed up but overall I'm okay.

But now I'm completely terrified at how much it affected me mentally. I was so depressed I could barely speak. I haven't felt that bad in years- I wrote a suicide note! I'm really worried about how completely it had me under its spell, and I'm afraid to try new things for fear of what it will do to my mental state. I don't even know which ingredient it was that did it, but I'm assuming either sweet potato or corn. How is it possible that food can do that to a person? Has anyone else experienced this? How do I determine which ingredient it is without putting myself at risk?

hi,

not sure if this will help at all- but i react in the same way to dairy. dark repetitive thoughts, i really struggle to get them out of my head even though the sensible me knows ishouldnt be paying them any attention. i dont do dairy now lol.

on another note- i started a thread a while ago on the difference between high oleic sunflower oil, and sunflower oil because i use to react to the high oleic tortilla chips but not the other. not sure why and nobody had any answers!!

were they gluten free chips? did it say so on the packet?  it could be a contamination issue during manufacture . to be honest the only way of finding out what it is   is by trying all the ingredients individually - a complete pain i know.

hope you find out what it is   sorry i couldnt help more

Could it have been cross contamination rather than a particular ingredient?  I get that way from gluten.  I'm glad we don't have any guns in our house...

They say they're certified gluten free, and their policy says:

"All of our products and processes are inspected, tested and certified gluten free by the Gluten Free Certification Organization. Additionally, suppliers are required to provide negative-allergen documentation to guarantee their ingredients are gluten free. We also verify these results using a third party laboratory."

They seem pretty legit, but I'll definitely email them to be 100%. I also don't think oil is the problem for me, as I eat high oleic safflower oil-based vegenaise by the jarful with no issue.

I eat these chips with zero issues and I am ultra sensitive to gluten hits....miniscule ones.  I have gotten horribly sick from crumbs so I consider these chips safe.  They have an excellent certification policy and most companies do not go this far to ensure safety.

You have in your signature that you are unable to tolerate grains and these contain corn.  Perhaps it was the corn.  Grains can be problematic and affect mental state.  In the 1950's, in Britain, bi-polar was often referred to as "bread madness" because the Europeans have known for a while that wheat and other grains can directly affect those with bi-polar disorder. Not saying you have that but yes, grains can have a tremendous impact on mental state for some people.  Definitely stay away from these with reactions that severe!

One of my symptoms is also depression and anxiety. If I start getting anxious, or depressed, etc for no other reason, it was probably a reaction. I had a really bad bout a few months ago, worse than a long long time, and it scared the s$#&e out of me (and my boyfriend). Not good at all.

As for Food That Tasted Good, they also don't seem to treat me super well. All their chips are gluten free, but some do contain soy, so I just steer clear of them in general now. No bad reactions, but they just don't sit well.

Corn is a definite possibility, but only if you have similar reactions to corn otherwise. Do you have any other intolerances? Are there any other foods that seem to bother you? could it have been CC from something else?

In any case, stop eating them. Hope you can figure out the culprit, but mostly hope you feel better and the clouds start of lift. I can handle aches and stomach issues and all that, but the mental stuff is brutal.

Hugs

Ichthus is the Greek word (using English letters) for fish. The letters in the actual Greek word form an acronym that come from the first letters in the Greek words for "Jesus", "God's Son," "Savior".   Now, back to your family's denial of your celiac disease, I think you can relate to this:

Thanks for the kind words. It's hard to convince my doctor to investigate further because of a negative blood test and he only tested me for one marker. 🙃 I've come to the point where I need to take this into my own hands because the doctors are infuriating and it's not going anywhere. I've been gluten free for a week and feeling better but I was still consuming dairy and I think that's what's backing me up. Next week no dairy introduced.

Hello mantooth nice to meet you it's so uncanny what you wrote you sound just like me even the back issues are exactly the same and I'm new here too trying to find out if I have the same had I too have been struggling to find answers with my docters I don't have a diagnosis but I've been struggling like forever and was told ibs and health aniexty was my problem but on researching I've come to the conclusion it's probably more because i cut gluten and lactose out for 6 months and  it was a incredible change for me so although I can't help with diagnosis I can say your not alone in trying  to find answers 😊
