Christmas Goodies

I know that most things that are "holiday" candy are not safe despite what is normal for most brand names. Does anyone know of a glute free version of a chocolate orange, cherry cordial (aka chocolate covered cherry) or those multi flavored boxes of chocolates? I can probably make the cherries, but I think everything else is above me.

I don't know if you have one near you, but all See's candy is gluten-free.  someone told me Aldi had some nice chocolates - but I haven't looked into them

you might want to look at nuts.com - they have a pretty decent selection of treats in their gluten-free section.  i can't recall cherries, but if ya like walnuts, they have these maple mesquite pod walnuts that i can't stop eating.  they're not gonna make it till Christmas lolz

Sorry, everyone, but my celiac husband and my (probably celiac but undiagnosed) self just got a big box of Sees chocolates as a Christmas thank you gift.

So I went online to determine the gluten free status of See's candies.

The quote from the allergen information page on the See's website states that ..."See's candies are not gluten free".

https://www.sees.com/help/allergen/

So we are waiting for someone that could use some chocolates for Christmas :(

That's odd.  Last week when we looked at it, it said all were gluten-free.  Many of us Celiacs have been eating them and doing fine.  Sounds like some lawyers got to them?

That is weird.  Jane Anderson who has DH recently verified that See’s is gluten free as of 10-2018.    Not officially “gluten free” because that would mean that the product has been tested to be under 20 ppm or even certified.    But in terms of ingredients, no gluten was used.

More about the company which is now owned by Warren Buffett.

  • “See’s is not gluten free certified, but all of the products and factories are gluten free. As part of getting a gluten-free certification, the inspector verifies that raw ingredients are being sourced from an NSF certified gluten-free supplier. According to a spokesperson, because See's ingredient suppliers are not certified gluten free, at this point the company is not planning on pursuing certification.”

https://www.thebalancesmb.com/sees-candies-is-a-warren-buffett-company-1326017

Even the Celiac Disease Foundation lists See’s as gluten free, but of course formulations can change and as KarenG stated, attorneys try to prevent lawsuits.

I checked the See’s website and it is the first time I have seen them mention wheat.    Looks like they have a new supplier (source) that is no longer gluten free so they can not feel good about saying the candy is gluten free anymore.

I just bought some See’s this week to give as gifts and to share on Christmas.  I love their chocolate covered raisins.

More investigation is needed!

Alter eco is supposed to be gluten free as well, but there is another thread saying they are not. I'm never sure if people are actually reacting to gluten or if they cross react and then assume it's gluten. I had an alter eco truffle the other day and was fine, but again it's hard to track down what's factual information any more.

Hi Belle Oops!  Can you eat burgers OK? So many of them have added cereal to pad them out.  Hope the after-effects are not too bad? I'm OK. Here in SE UK we are having a mini heatwave. 35° today. Keeping cool as much as possible to prevent itching from the heat. Otherwise not too bad thanks. Dapsone 100mg proving much better than 50mg. Still a few itchy patches but no spots as such. Making life easier.  How are you generally (when not eating brown sauce)? Sue

How is everyone?  I made a silly mistake and chose HP (brown) sauce on my burger at a BBQ at the weekend. Hope everyone is okay.

I just thought I'd update this post. My father has had some issues with his heart rythym and we found giving him an electrolyte drink plus a vitamin D supplement with extra calcium containing food (yoghurt) made a big difference, and very quickly. My own problems with ectopic heartbeats started up again with warmer weather so I thought I'd take a leaf out of his book, and now, for the second time, after just one Phizz Electrolyte Drink, and a dose of vitamin D (Fultium D 800 x 4) with a milkshake, my ectopics disappeared within the hour.   Probably the Phizz drink rather than the D with calcium, but maybe it all helped?  Just mentioning this in case anyone is looking for answers.
