Symptoms after being “glutened”

TB93

Recommended Posts

TB93 Newbie

I have celiac and over the past weekend I was at a wedding and unknowingly got glutened with potatoes.

i was wondering does anyone feel this way after being glutened? Or do you think it might be something other than celiac

Sunday the day after the wedding my hands were red, I was bloated, and felt weak. Monday through today, I have had the worst body aches, not being able to have a strong grip, aching joints (hands bright red), face turning bright red and hot. My hands feel like they’ve been crushed by bricks and the rest of my body feels like I’ve been in an accident and my legs feel like I just did the most intense leg workout.

since I’ve felt sick all this week, I’ve taken it very easy, so I know the body aches aren’t from me doing physical activity.

any help, advice, or insight is appreciated!

Because of the red, hot face and hands it sounds more like an allergic reaction than it does a glutening.

I thought that too, but I haven’t had anything different other than being glutened and the red hot face happened a day or two later.

not sure what these other symptoms are though.

You can develop allergies at any time of life.

Hello there TB93

I hope you do feel better soon.

I do get chills where my face gets red, and I feel hot and cold throughout my body, about 1-2 hours after glutening but I don't think I've ever experienced it after a day.  I don't suppose there is a chance you were glutened after the wedding?

I suppose as well it could be a viral infection?

In the past, has gluten caused body aches, chills etc for you?

Thank you. Maybe? But I’m very strict in my house with not allowing gluten and I’ve only been eating at home.

@TB93,

I think it was the potatoes.  Potatoes and other nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, and peppers) contain alkaloids that promote "leaky gut" and inflammation.

I get achy joints and swelling.  My hands get so puffy and stuff I can't knit!

I hope you feel better!  Drink plenty of fluids.  Vitamins C, B12, and Pyridoxine B6 can help reduce histamine levels which helps reduce inflammation.  Vitamin D can help reduce inflammation, too.

Keep us posted on your progress!

Potatoes do not have gluten, but they are nightshade plants which contain poisonous alkaloids. Persons with genetic mutations on the BCHE gene are especially susceptible. (see "butyrylcholinesterace deficiency," and a few variations on that name.)   Any potato skin with green should be discarded, and never eat raw potatoes. I suggest avoiding all nightshade plants for a while and see if you feel better. Also, you can get your genes tested (I used Promethease and 23andMe raw data, but Promethease has now merged with another company) to see if you have a BCHE mutation. Green potatoes are actually toxic for everyone, however. The green itself is chlorophyll but it signifies the presence of solanine, which is the toxic part.

Ichthus is the Greek word (using English letters) for fish. The letters in the actual Greek word form an acronym that come from the first letters in the Greek words for "Jesus", "God's Son," "Savior".   Now, back to your family's denial of your celiac disease, I think you can relate to this:
