Hi all,

I just turned on the TV for some noise while I was doing the dishes and I caught the last minute of Martha. I normally don't watch it, but she mentioned that tomorrow she is going to have Emma Rossum on the show and they are going to cook something together. I know that Emma Rossum is Celiac, so I am thinking they might mention it and that the food they cook is gluten free? It's enough for me to tape it and see if they emntion Celiac/gluten free food...

How cool! I had never heard of her, so I did a websearch and found that it's even mentioned in her bio on IMDB.com Open Original Shared Link

Nice to see a celeb who is open about it, rather than rumors. I hope she mentions it.

Off to set the Tivo! This is exciting--all these mentions on TV lately.

Thanks Mariann :D

Thanks for posting. I never watch Martha but did listen to her XM radio show when she had Kim Kholler on taking about eating gluten free around the globe. I'll be sure and tape it tomorrow. Wow! That would be aweseome if they mention at least gluten on that show. That could really do a lot in terms of people getting used to the term. That crazy Steve Colbert (comedy central) made up a word 'truthiness' and now it's litterally popping up everywhere....even on Oprah one day.

gf4life--thanks for posting. I won't be able to watch today, but please let us know how it goes. Also, Nantzie, thanks for posting the biography. I've actually seen her in movies without knowing who she was. It's interesting that she'd play a young Audrey Hepburn considering that there's been a whole segment about speculation of Hepburn's possible celiac disease on the celebrity thread.

It was disappointing. She was cooking w/ Martha and said she has a gluten allergy. Martha said "oh, you can't have flour". She said yes and made a face. That was it! How about "I can have other flours" and maybe even get her to make something special?

That is dissapointing--I recorded it, and then my parents called, and I haven't had a chance to watch. I guess I didn't miss much--thanks!

Okay, now I admit that she was NOT there to talk about Celiac/gluten, but they did cook a gluten-free dessert, they just didn't say it was gluten-free. at least she did mention that she cannot eat gluten, but I do wish she would have said something about the other gluten-free flours that she could make "pastries" and such out of...

If she really loves to cook, then I am sure she does cook gluten-free goodies for herself. It is a bit misleading that she replied to Martha's "so you can't eat any flour at all?", with a look of disappointment and a "no". I mean she CAN eat flour, just not gluten flours... there is a big difference. But like I said, she was on the show to cook, not talk about her food issues. At least she did mention and the word does get out. Someone will hear it and look up "gluten allergy".

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
