Gluten Reactions Stronger Now...

I've been doing really well with the gluten-free diet so far. Feeling so much better than in the past, and my psoriasis is GONE without using medication every day.

Then on Monday, without thinking, I ate a crumb of brownie off my finger after handing one to my toddler. A headache came on very soon after that, but I don't know if it was the heat (we were at my in laws' non-A/C home, it was only about 80 in the house at that time) or something else.

Today I took a bite of Corn Pops before remembering they have wheat starch in them. I did spit the bite out, but now have a bad headache and feel slightly nauseated.

It's possible I was glutened by Clif Bars, as well--I ate half of one Monday. I read the label carefully, and it stated they source ingredients that are wheat free....but now that I think about it, that doesn't mean gluten free, does it?

Oh well, back to heightened vigilance. My neighbor commented that I must have amazing willpower to stay away from cookies and such...it's not so much willpower, I think, as it is learned behavior. ;)

Ha--you're right about the 'learned behavior'--we learn we get ill from it so we stay away! :D

Yes, many of us react strongly to smaller and smaller amounts of gluten the longer we're gluten-free.

Yup on the Cliff Bars.....sometimes all it takes is a 5 second Google to find out if a product has gluten:

Are any of your products gluten-free?

While CLIF Nectar, Splashers, Twisted Fruit, LUNA Elixir, Luna Sports Products, CLIF SHOT gels, CLIF SHOT BLOKS, and CLIF SHOT Energy Drinks do not contain any gluten ingredients, they are not produced in a gluten-free zone. All other Clif products contain gluten as an active ingredient.

***And why not make your toddler gluten-free brownies?? They are every bit as good according to my Hubby and Daughter. Im not eating any grains right now, so have not tasted them. But they sure gobble em up. Pamelas is what I use for a mix or I make homemade.

I don't know about adult CLIF bars but the kid versions have oats in them and mainstream oats are cross-contaminated and not gluten-free. Have to watch out for that as some manufacturers don't understand that and label their oat containing products as gluten-free when they aren't.

I believe that Cliff bars are not gluten-free--Cliff Nectar bars are gluten-free. :)

We were at my mother-in-law's house; she made the brownies for the kids. I don't expect her to have gluten-free things on hand for me, so I brought my own food. :) At home I don't make non-gluten-free things, my husband buys cookies or such if he and the kids want them.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
